Highway Safety Enforcement Officers possess a general public safety mandate and are responsible for the enforcement of various provincial and federal legislations including the Criminal Code of Canada.

As a member of Highway Safety Enforcement, the Highway Safety Enforcement (HSE) Officers are sworn Peace Officers and Special Constables as defined under the Criminal Code of Canada and the New Brunswick Police Act and as such have all the corresponding powers, authorities, and immunities. A Highway Safety Enforcement (HSE) Officer is responsible for enforcement of various Acts as they pertain to commercial vehicle safety as well as ensuring compliance with the Off-Road Vehicle Act, it's related regulations and other applicable legislation as directed by the Inspection and Enforcement Branch

What you will do
As a Highway Safety Officer with Inspection and Enforcement New Brunswick, you will take on a dynamic and impactful role that helps keep New Brunswick's roads safe for everyone. No two days are the same. You'll be on the front lines of public safety, working both independently and alongside partner agencies.

Working in accordance with operational requirements, you will:

  • Conduct inspections and enforce regulations to ensure commercial and off-road vehicles operate safely and responsibly
  • Work collaboratively with other enforcement agencies on joint operations and initiatives
  • Respond to public safety emergencies and provide critical support when it matters most
  • Engage with communities and organizations through presentations that promote road safety awareness
  • Monitor and enforce compliance related to vehicle weights, speeds, and over-dimensional loads
  • Ensure adherence to Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations
  • Play an active role in protecting motorists and improving highway safety across the province
  • Take on a variety of additional responsibilities that keep your work meaningful and rewarding

This position requires professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to carry and appropriately use use-of-force tools in a range of situations, in accordance with established policies.

Need to have:

  • High School diploma supplemented by successful completion of a minimum of one-year course in law enforcement
  • A minimum of 6 years related experience

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Linguistic Requirements
Some positions require written and spoken competence in French and English. Others will require written and spoken competence in English only. Please state your language capability.

Operational Requirements: The following operational requirement are also required:

  • Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license
  • Work nights and weekends and respond to after-hours calls
  • Work an 80-hour work week

Once trained the successful candidate must have the ability to:

  • Work alone with minimal supervision
  • Carry and utilize control tactics tools including firearms
  • Perform field work/patrols
  • Ability to carry out physically demanding tasks
  • At times, work outside in inclement weather on all types of terrain
  • Operate patrol vehicles, snowmobiles, ATVs, and any other machinery deemed necessary by the Department of Justice and Public Safety

The selected candidate will be based out of a specific location assigned at time of hiring. However, considerable travel throughout the region will be required. Employees may be required to travel outside the region for special operations and training.

Conditions of Employment: As conditions of employment, successful candidates will be required to successfully complete and maintain the following items arranged by the department:

  • The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Inspection (CVSA) certification
  • An approved psychological suitability assessment
  • Department of Justice and Public Safety Use of Force training and firearm qualification.
  • Any other training deemed mandatory by the Department of Justice and Public Safety

Before an appointment can be made, the successful candidate will be required to complete the following at their own expense: The successfully candidates must provide a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) vulnerable sector reference check including fingerprints. The Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) at the Cadet level, unless requirements of the physical test have already been met within the 12 months prior to the closing date of the competition. If you have met this requirement within the past 12 months, please submit proof with your application.

Wage
$2,434.00 to $2,955.00 Biweekly based on education and experience
