The Family Crown Services Branch of the Office of the Attorney General, Department of Justice and Public Safety is seeking an individual to temporarily join their team as a Lawyer or Senior Lawyer.

What you will do
Reporting to the Regional Director, the successful candidate will operate within the following mandated areas of civil practice:

  • Representation of the Department of Social Development in adult and child protection proceedings; private custody and access matters;
  • Representation of the Director of Support Enforcement in judicial support enforcement proceedings;
  • Acting as Agent of the Attorney General for New Brunswick in matters under section 19 of the Divorce Act;
  • Acting as Agent of the Attorney General for New Brunswick under the International Child Abduction Act;
  • Such other areas of government practice as the Attorney General may mandate;
  • Legal advice and legal opinions related to the aforenoted mandated areas of civil practice;
  • Appeals in matters involving the Minister of Social Development and/or the Director of Support Enforcement.

The successful candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, be detailed oriented and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills are essential as is the ability to maintain composure in difficult situations.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Need to have

  • Law Degree; completion of Articling; and membership in good standing or eligibility for membership to the Law Society of New Brunswick.
  • Successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.

Lawyer

  • Up to 8 years of membership in good standing at the bar
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of family law and experience in court

Senior Lawyer

  • Minimum of 8 years of membership in good standing at the bar
  • Extensive knowledge family law and experience in court

Candidates with less than 8 years of membership in good standing at the bar will be considered as a Lawyer. Candidates with 8 years or more will be considered as a Senior Lawyer. Please state your date of admission to a Canadian Law Society.

Writtenand spoken competence in English is required, please state your language capability

Candidates must demonstrate on their application how they have acquired the education and experience for this position. OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The following operational requirement(s) are also required:

  • Occasional Travel within the province;
  • Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license;
  • Working outside of regular hours of work without prior notice.

Nice to Have (their asset qualifications)

  • Experience in the areas of child and adult protection within the last five years

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage
Lawyer from $88,291.00 to $139,958.00 annually based on admission date to the bar
Senior Lawyer from $141,359.00 to $185,220.00 annually based on admission date to the bar

Recognition and Retention Premium
The recognition and retention premium is based on written confirmation of admission to bar of a Canadian law society

  • Fifteen (15) years but less than twenty (20) years - 1.0%
  • Twenty (20) years but less than twenty-five (25) years - 2.0%
  • Twenty-five (25) years - 3.0%.

Work environment

  • Office location: Moncton Law Courts, 145 Assomption Boulevard, Moncton, New Brunswick
  • Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30
