Position Overview

The Chapman Group is helping its client, Saint John Newcomers Centre, hire its next Executive Director. Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair, the Executive Director provides strategic leadership, organizational direction, and full accountability for SJNC's mission, people, operations, and organizational performance. The Executive Director is responsible for the organization's financial sustainability, program quality, community trust, organizational culture, and effective governance. This is an ideal opportunity for a community-oriented leader with a strong record of organizational and people leadership, a demonstrated commitment to inclusion, and the ability to work effectively across government, employer, funder, and community relationships.

The successful candidate will be a strategic, people-focused, and culturally responsive leader who builds trust, strengthens relationships, supports employees, and advances SJNC's mission. They will understand the realities of nonprofit leadership and be able to lead effectively in a complex and evolving community environment.

Responsabilités

Strategic Leadership

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow programs, partnerships, and community impact, ensuring the organization has a clear direction and is positioned for long-term success.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of strategic plans and organizational priorities.
  • Anticipate emerging issues, opportunities, and external developments that may affect SJNC, its programs, or the communities it serves, and position the organization to respond appropriately.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources and funders' investments.
  • Provide the Board with timely, transparent, and meaningful reporting on organizational performance, finances, risks, strategic priorities, and emerging issues to support effective governance and informed decision-making.

Community Leadership

  • Provide a grassroots space for newcomer voices to be heard and represented in our communities and in civic and government institutions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with government, employers, funders, community partners, donors, sponsors, and philanthropic partners to advance SJNC's mandate and strategic priorities.
  • Represent newcomer communities and organizational interests through advocacy, public visibility and relevant community, regional, and public forums.
  • Maintain awareness of global events, conflicts, and emerging issues affecting newcomer communities locally, and support culturally sensitive, well-informed organizational responses and communication.

Organizational and People Leadership

  • Lead resource development efforts, including funding proposals, funder relationships, and diversification of revenue.
  • Foster an inclusive, accountable, transparent, and psychologically safe workplace culture where employees feel respected, supported, connected to the mission, and able to sustain healthy workloads and professional growth.
  • Lead and inspire a multicultural team with humility, curiosity, and adaptability, valuing diverse perspectives, listening actively, encouraging collaboration, and navigating organizational dynamics and change effectively.
  • Oversee effective HR practices and organizational capacity, including recruitment, performance management, employee development, succession planning, and structures and resources that support strong service delivery.
  • Ensure appropriate operational and financial oversight in partnership with the Board and leadership team
Qualifications

Education

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as community development, public administration, business, social work, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Leadership & Professional Experience

  • Significant progressive leadership experience in a nonprofit, community, public-sector, or similarly mission-driven organization, with demonstrated responsibility for people, organizational performance, and strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrated success leading, motivating, and developing diverse teams and building a healthy, inclusive organizational culture.
  • Understanding of nonprofit or community-based work, including the ability to balance organizational priorities, service demands, employee wellbeing, and available resources.
  • Track record of significant budget and grant management experience.
  • Experience building and maintaining effective partnerships across government, employer, funder, and community sectors.
  • Experience working with diverse communities, including newcomer, low-income, racialized, and multicultural communities.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and public representation skills, with the cultural awareness to work effectively across diverse communities and perspectives.

Language & Multicultural Communication

  • English-French bilingualism is considered an asset.
  • Awareness of multilingual workplace and community dynamics and a commitment to accessible, inclusive communication are important.
  • Additional language skills and experience working across languages and cultures are considered assets.

Compensation

The compensation range is $85,000-$100,000 annually, commensurate with the candidate's knowledge, skills and experience.
