Job Summary
Reporting to the Centre for Translational Genomics (CTG) laboratory leadership, the Laboratory Scientist III will support CTG testing through bioinformatic software development and implementation, as well as genetic variant interpretation and classification and contributions to non-clinical testing, research, and related projects. Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Determining the appropriate bioinformatic methods, approaches, and requirements needed for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis and storage
• Creating, customizing, implementing, and using bioinformatic software, including for the identification of genetic variants
• Developing, optimizing, and validating new complex genetic and genomic tests, procedures, software, equipment and instrumentation
• Developing guidelines, objectives, standards, policies, processes, and procedures
• Participating in, developing, and administering quality control and quality assurance activities
• Keeping abreast of techniques, methodologies, and current trends in the genetic and genomic testing, NGS, and bioinformatic fields
• Ascertaining variant-specific data and interpreting and classifying genetic variants according to internal classification criteria and ACMG/ClinGen guidelines
• Writing clinical reports
• Executing and managing various projects
• Participating in the testing of non-clinical samples for external research and industry clients
• Managing research projects and performing research
• Working collaboratively with other laboratory staff and various internal and external stakeholders

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Constantly lifts/moves objects less than 10 lbs and occasionally objects up to 30 lbs.
Constantly stands, sometimes for extended periods, or sits for extended periods requiring constant repetitive movement. Also, constantly bends or stretches and works in awkward positions.
Constantly requires fine finger and precision work and requires the use of gross motor skills to perform with accurate control and steadiness.
Visual concentration is required when performing procedures and auditory concentration is required to communicate and give information, to listen for alarms, timers, etc.

Job Qualifications
• Doctoral Degree in Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, or a related field is required.
• Minimum of three years of experience within the last five years in a workplace setting working with Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data and workflows, including variant analysis, is required.
• Experience performing complex cases of variant classification is required.
• Expert knowledge of NGS technologies and techniques.
• Expert knowledge of bioinformatic analysis principles and processes.
• Expert knowledge of the guidelines, tools, and processes for the identification, interpretation, classification, and reporting of genetic variants.
• Expert knowledge of Genetic and genomic theory, principles, and techniques.
• Strong knowledge in quality control and assurance.
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated strong research, analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Demonstrated ability to foster positive working relationships and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with a high degree of independence.
• Demonstrated strong leadership skills, the ability lead and mentor team members, and
• The ability to provide consultation to staff as a subject matter expert.
• Demonstrated strong project management skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities at once.
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of bioinformatic software.
• Satisfactory record of work performance is required.
