Memorial University's Office of Development and Alumni Engagement is seeking a fundraising professional to join its team. The successful applicant will support the University's planned giving program. Planned Giving results in a donation that is designated for a charitable organization at a future date. It generally refers to gifts in a will, but can also include donations through life insurance, unused retirement assets, personal property, trusts, and donor-advised funds. Planned gifts are usually made as part of a financial or estate plan, and enable a donor to support the causes that matter most to them. The Development Office exists for the mutual benefit of Memorial University and its stakeholders and solicits philanthropic donations and gifts-in-kind. The Office is an active and team-oriented group that is leading University fundraising efforts in support of strategic priorities.
As a fundraising professional, the Development Officer, Planned Giving, will be responsible for developing a portfolio of potential planned giving donors as part of the overall philanthropic objectives of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Reporting to the Senior Development Officer, Planned Giving, the successful candidate will formulate and implement fundraising strategies to grow the number of bequests, donated life insurance policies and deferred philanthropic gifts to be donated to the university. Duties include identifying, evaluating, cultivating and soliciting donors (alumni, faculty and friends) who may be interested in leaving such a gift to Memorial; working with donors and their professional advisors to confirm the gift and assist with the administration necessary to receive the gift; consulting and collaborating with staff in the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement and across the university to develop annual philanthropic goals and strategic objectives; providing status reports to the Senior Development Officer and academic units; serving as a liaison between donors, volunteers, administrators and faculty to maximize donations; assisting with the planning and executing of a coordinated donor relations program to enhance the relationship between donors and the University; drafting letters, gift agreements and other donor-centered materials; collaborating with communications staff on promotion and marketing materials; participating in selected special fundraising projects; maintaining a basic knowledge of federal and provincial estate, trust and tax laws; preparing and maintaining accurate donor records and financial reports; and performing other related duties as necessary.

The successful candidate will be a people person with sophisticated interpersonal skills, excellent judgement, empathy, discretion and professionalism. Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively, manage multiple projects from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines and work independently and within a team. Willingness to work some non-traditional hours and to travel nationally and internationally is required. Previous experience with Microsoft Office, Teams, Blackbaud NXT, Raiser's Edge or similar data platforms would be beneficial, as would CFRE and/or financial planning designations. A track record of success in securing significant donations is desirable. Knowledge of Memorial University and its unique mandate regarding service to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador would be an asset.
