JOB SUMMARY:
Sagamok Anishnawbek is seeking a By-Law Enforcement Officer to help maintain a safe, respectful, and livable community through the enforcement of local by-laws, with a focus on animal control. The role involves responding to complaints, promoting voluntary compliance, issuing violations, and educating the public on by-law responsibilities. The officer will work closely with the Community Justice Manager, maintain records, and engage with the community and stakeholders.
POSITION DUTIES:
- Respond to bylaw inquires/complaints.
- Discuss bylaw requirements with the people involved and attempt to reach an understanding and obtain voluntary compliance.
- Investigate bylaw offences.
- performs a variety of animal control functions such as impounding animals and enforcing related ordinances related to the bylaw
- Responds to calls about injured dogs, complaints of dogs, surrenders and dangerous dogs.
- Functions as an employee of Sagamok Anishnawbek in the area of confidentiality and professional ethics.
- Preparing reports, maintains files and follows up on all reported cases in the Community.
- Issue tickets, notices or compliance agreements for by-law violations.
- Securing assigned posts.
- Promotes compliance with community bylaws through public education.
- Proficient computer skills
- Assisting and maintain the development of an animal registry, provides information to the public regarding licensing, vaccination clinics, pet-owner responsibilities, spaying and neutering clinics.
- Strong Oral and written communication skills.
- The ability to react quickly and with good judgement.
- Good observation, problem solving and decision-making skills
- To report all activities and concerns to the supervisor or the Governance environment.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Respect for, sensitivity towards as well as knowledge and understanding of Anishnawbek culture, traditions, and the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Is subject to six months probation.
- Clear Criminal Records Check (CPIC) that is valid within 6 months.
- Valid drivers license and vehicle for on-the-job use.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Police Foundations/ Community Justice Services Diploma
- MLEO certification through the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers Association of Ontario (completed or ability to complete)
- A valid drivers license and transportation
- Current standard first aid CPR/AED certificate or (ability to complete)
- Valid within 6 months Criminal Records Check (CPIC)/Vulnerable Sector Screen
- Six [6] month probationary period
