OVERVIEW: The Southern Care Program requires a caring and nurturing individual or couple to provide a long-term placement in a stable home environment for youth between the ages of 11-17. This position requires training, education, and experience in the field of child development, childcare and foster care.

The Southern Care Program provides in-home support and respite along with guidance from a team of professionals including a Case Manager, Therapeutic Support and Cultural supports through our Wellness Team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Provide the day-to-day primary responsibilities of caring for the youth; this includes ensuring medical, physical, emotional, cultural, and educational needs are met.
  • Maintain expenditures related to youth and home, maintain a safe and welcoming home environment, provide appropriate clothing, and adhere to Foster Care regulations and the child maintenance guidelines.
  • Respond to incidents and concerns from a trauma-informed perspective.
  • Utilize a therapeutic and holistic approach to support wellness focusing on all four quadrants of the medicine wheel
  • Be a healthy role model and source of guidance for the development of daily life and social skills.
  • Support the child in attendance of medical appointments, therapeutic resources, counseling, or other appointments as required.
  • Participate in the assessment and case planning for the short and long-term care plans for the child.
  • Facilitate family and community connection by working alongside family and community in meeting case planning objectives and maintaining regularly scheduled visits.
  • Maintain clear and concise file recordings and reports and provide to supervisor on a scheduled basis and provide incident reports as necessary.
  • Communicate with support team, supervisor, and agency workers in a professional and cooperative manner.
  • Attend all requisite training provided by or offered through Shawenim Abinoojii Inc. (SAI).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The successful candidate(s) will provide Foster Care services in their own home or in a home owned and managed by (SAI).
  • Excellent communication and team-work skills.
  • Strong organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nations culture and traditional philosophies.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe family systems.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe is preferred and considered an asset.
  • Expanded knowledge and skill base working with various social, psychological, and physical health needs.
  • Ability to approach this role from a place of empathy and kindness, with knowledge of Indigenous culture and history.
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba driver's license and have access to a vehicle with the ability to provide a clear drivers abstract.
  • Must have a satisfactory Criminal Record (vulnerable Sector Check), Child Abuse Registry Check and Prior Contact Check are mandatory.

SUPPORT FOR CAREGIVERS:

Support for Foster Parent(s) is provided through the Southern Care Program team as well as through Southeast Child and Family Services workers.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Generous Compensation in the form of a service fee as well as funds to provide for the needs of the children
  • A large, well maintained with specific maintenance services provided by SAI
  • Weekly contact and ongoing home visits from SAI Case Managers and Therapeutic Support
  • Orientation, training, and ongoing learning
  • Respite and in home support is provided
  • Peer support and monthly caregiver meetings
  • Conferences and recognition event
