OVERVIEW: The Northern Care Program requires a caring and nurturing individual or couple to use a holistic approach to provide a long-term, stable home environment for up to four children. The Northern Care Program provides community-based placement resources to keep kids in their home community.

The potential house parent(s) must approach this role from a place of empathy and kindness, with knowledge of Indigenous culture and history. Candidates with knowledge of Anishinaabe family systems and approaches to healing and wellness are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate(s) will provide Foster Care services within the First Nation, in a home provided by Shawenim Abinoojii Inc. (SAI).

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Provide day-to-day primary care for the children.
  • Support holistic wellness: this includes supporting the physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental needs of the child according to their developmental needs and strengths.
  • Support a positive sense of self-identity through supporting family relationships and community engagement.
  • Facilitate family and community connection by maintaining regularly scheduled visits and attending community events with the children.
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming home environment, with stable and predictable routines.
  • Be a healthy role model and source of guidance and empowerment for the development of daily life and social skills.
  • Maintain expenditures related to the home provide appropriate clothing and complete clothing and adhere to program and foster care regulations and the maintenance guidelines.
  • Respond to incidents and concerns from a trauma-informed perspective.
  • Support the child in attendance of medical appointments, therapeutic resources, counseling, or other appointments.
  • Participate in the assessment and case planning for the short and long-term care plans for the child.
  • Maintain clear and concise documentation and reports and provide to supervisor on a scheduled basis.
  • Communicate with support team, supervisor, and agency workers in a professional and cooperative manner.
  • Attend all requisite training provided by or offered through, SAI.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • House Parent (single and/or couples) are required to live in the home which are located on the Southeast First Nation communities and provide a long-term stable family environment.
  • Experience providing foster care services for children.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous approaches to community-care.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe is preferred and a definite asset.
  • Expanded knowledge and skill base working with various social, psychological, and physical health needs.
  • Must have a valid Manitoba driver's license and a reliable vehicle with the ability to provide a clear drivers abstract.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, Criminal Record check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), and Prior Contact Check as conditions of employment.
