Join ourYouth Transitional Housing Program (YTHP) team as a Youth Housing Worker, and play a key role in helping youth aged 16 to 21 build life skills, set meaningful goals, and thrive in a structured, supportive environment.

This full-time position is ideal for a motivated professional who understands the challenges faced by at-risk youth and is committed to trauma-informed, culturally responsive practice.

About the Role

The Youth Housing Worker provides direct support to youth living in residential transitional housing located in Whitby or Oshawa. You will guide youth through individualized life skills development, support their goal setting, and help them work toward independent living. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, consistent documentation, and active participation in maintaining a safe, structured, and empowering housing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Case Management and Youth Support

  • Build trusting and supportive relationships with youth residents.
  • Support youth in developing and revising individualized service plans and life goals.
  • Facilitate check-ins to monitor progress, provide feedback, and offer brief counselling.
  • Integrate trauma-informed care, cultural safety, and anti-oppressive practice in all interactions.
  • Assist with conflict resolution and support youth in adhering to house guidelines.
  • Advocate for youth with schools, social programs, and professionals.
  • Make appropriate community referrals and ensure ongoing wraparound support.

Life Skills Coaching

  • Mentor youth in essential skills such as financial literacy, job readiness, time management, hygiene, and housekeeping.
  • Coach youth through hands-on learning experiences and support their next steps toward independent living.

Documentation and Administrative Duties

  • Complete all required documentation, including move-in/move-out forms, service plans, incident reports, and logbooks.
  • Maintain accurate client records in accordance with agency policy.
  • Process receipts, cash requests, and manage petty cash as needed.
  • Attend and participate in agency meetings, supervision, and training sessions.

Housing Operations and Safety

  • Support youth in the upkeep of the home and model responsible residential living.
  • Assist with housekeeping, food prep, and seasonal maintenance (e.g., snow removal, yard work).
  • Follow security procedures, including opening/closing protocols and regular room checks.
  • Enforce house rules and ensure health and safety standards are upheld.
  • Report maintenance issues and serious occurrences in accordance with procedures.
  • Provide feedback on program trends and continuous improvement opportunities.

What Were Looking For

Education & Certifications

  • Minimum two-year college diploma in Social Services, Child and Youth Work, or a related field.

Experience & Skills

  • Experience working with at-risk youth; residential experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of youth development, trauma-informed approaches, and cultural responsiveness.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations and resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Effective in group facilitation, mentoring, and role modelling.
  • Familiarity with common mental health issues affecting youth.
  • Organized, self-directed, and responsive to supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable with digital tools.

Working Conditions

  • Residential setting with ongoing physical activity (e.g., walking, lifting up to 25 lbs).
  • Seasonal outdoor duties may include snow removal and yard maintenance.
  • Exposure to infectious conditions is possible.
  • Regular interaction with youth, staff, and external agencies.
  • Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts, as required.
  • Manual dexterity required for computer use and administrative tasks.
