Position Title: Environmental Coordinator / Guardian

Reporting directly to the Environmental Specialist (or their designate) this position is primarily responsible for compliance inspections, environmental monitoring programs and supporting site reporting requirements. A large majority of time spent in this position will be outdoors sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

Responsibilities: (Including but not limited to)

  • •Working with local community members to support understanding and inclusion of Tahltan knowledge in field programs;
  • Hydrology, groundwater, and in-stream monitoring.
  • Environmental inspections;
  • Documentation and record keeping;
  • Conduct field monitoring and sampling programs as required under existing permits, licenses, and the company's Environmental Management Plan;
  • Assisting scientific specialists in the collection of baseline and effects programs for terrestrial and aquatic field programs;
  • Completing chain of custodies, processing, packing, and shipping collected samples as required;
  • Maintaining field notes;
  • Calibrating, installing, and maintaining sampling and monitoring equipment;
  • Entering collected field and laboratory data into the environmental database;
  • Conduct internal due diligence compliance inspections of various site facilities and operational activities;
  • Assisting with spill prevention and spill response;
  • Participating and assisting in waste and water management programs;
  • Other technical field and office tasks to support the environment development and site operations.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • 1-4 years of experience, preferably in a mining environment with experience in environmental monitoring and using off-road vehicles is preferred.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring/sampling is preferred (e.g. some combination of: stream/lake sampling, benthic/sediment sampling, groundwater sampling, fish sampling, stream flow measurement, vegetation identification, erosion/sedimentation monitoring and experience in environmental or cultural resource protection).
  • Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), or at a basic level with a keen willingness to take further training.
  • Experience with outdoors activities camping, hunting or fishing considered an asset.
  • Safety conscious, reliable, self-starter and a team player.
  • Valid BC Class 5 drivers license is preferred.
  • Good general physical health to perform rigorous outdoor activity.
  • Mechanical aptitude to use off-road vehicles and environmental monitoring equipment and to troubleshoot issues.
  • Strong orienteering and wilderness experience to access environmental monitoring locations safely.
  • Strong data management, time management and organizational skills with ability to take clear, concise and defensible field notes.
  • Occupational and/or wilderness first aid is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in traditional ecological knowledge and/or archaeological studies is considered a strong asset.

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace airport, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.
