The Catholic Centre for immigrants (CCI) has been serving refugees and immigrants for more than 65 years. CCI is a bridge between the 7,000 immigrants and refugees who come to Ottawa each year and the community. We provide programs and services to help newcomers settle and integrate. We also work in the community to promote the value of a diverse and more welcoming community for all.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Settlement Program Manager, the Settlement Youth Worker is responsible for activities related to the resettlement and integration of youth newcomers to Canada

This position reports to: Settlement Manager
Employment status: Contract – March 31, 2025
Hourly rate: $28.66- $32.41

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide information, orientation, and referrals to youth through one-on-one and group sessions.
  • Conduct needs assessments, case management and settlement action plans.
  • Support newcomer youth in resolving difficulties adjusting to life in Canada.
  • Provide short-term crisis intervention.
  • Connect youth with specific settlement needs to existing resources in the community.
  • Advocate on behalf of youth in order to improve their access to services.
  • Develop and deliver workshops that provide strategies and tools for youth based on current needs.
  • Organize activities throughout the year according to youth newcomer needs.
  • Outreach to newcomer youth.
  • Create partnerships to enhance access to services for youth newcomers.
  • Participate in meetings and activities that promote understanding of newcomers.
  • Recruit volunteers that can be mentors/peers of newcomer youth.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers and staff to ensure efficient and effective delivery of events and activities.
  • Provide reports and document services as requested by the program manager.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Settlement Youth Worker understands and supports CCI's mission and experience in the resettlement and integration of newcomer youth to Canada. This position requires strong communications and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational abilities and exceptional cultural competency. The Settlement Youth Worker must be a self-starter with initiative who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.

  • Post-secondary education in a social services field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of services and resources available to assist newcomer youth.
  • Cross-cultural competence and demonstrated ability to function in a culturally diverse workplace.
  • Ability to provide one-on-one support to clients.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with confidential material and matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and group sessions.
  • Fluency in verbal English is required.
  • Fluency in French or other languages in a strong asset.
  • Fluency in verbal and written English or French is essential. Other languages an asset.
  • Proficiency and experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle is preferred.
