Reporting to the Chief Operating Office (COO), the Director, Operations works closely with the other members of the Senior Management team to ensure seamless delivery of service to our clients and information flow throughout the divisions within MHNL while meeting or exceeding performance requirements. The Director, Operations, while being responsible for the day-to-day operations of MHNL, will possess a management style that is transformational, visionary, creative, collaborative, and supportive of the vision, goals, mission and values of the organization leading staff and systems responsible to meet service delivery performance requirements. Working closely with other members of the Senior Management team and key parties, you will collaboratively develop strategic operational plans that are aligned with the organization's plans ensuring the continuity and improvement of MHNL's operations and standards. The incumbent will ensure adoption and integration processes are in place for the projects being created through the innovation and integration stream.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership for the overall operational effectiveness of the MHNL operations through established best practices and standardized operating policies and task responsibilities.
  • Provide direction and guidance to the operational teams to assist them with the implementation of best practices.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach, assigning accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, monitor, and evaluate results.
  • Lead, accountable for and oversee the annual development and implementation of the operations business planning process and budgets.
  • Work in conjunction with the Director, System Performance to ensure the application of clinical competency maintenance programming that allows clinical management staff to maintain clinical skills and registration.
  • Coordinate labor contingency plans in conjunction with Human Resources.
  • Oversight and coordination of special events and/or disasters that will impact our provincial system in whole or part.
  • Ensure the appropriate staffing/training policies and procedures are in place at the supervisory level to ensure the consistent application of operational, contractual, procedures on a daily/weekly/annual basis.
  • Responsible for business continuity in the event of situations impacting MHNL's ability to deliver service.
  • Serve as a management liaison on various boards and committees; and
  • Provide leadership by participating, supporting, and ensuring accountabilities for all initiatives that foster a culture of patient safety and a safe work environment.

Professional Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Post-secondary education is required in the health sciences field, or related field or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Post graduate studies or master's degree, preferably in the business field, is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in EMS management within a high-performance accredited system.
  • Experience in the service and/or health care sector is an asset.
  • Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 4 Drivers License (or equivalent) or the ability to obtain one, with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Member in good standing of your licensure association.
  • Demonstrated experience in a geographically dispersed, complex, multi program/service environment including multi-unionized environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead in times of meaningful change.
  • Experience with operations and financial performance.
  • Specialized knowledge in business development planning and project management is required; and
  • Possess an active paramedic license in good standing with your professional association.
  • Are an effective two way internal and external communicator who can build and foster positive relationship with employees and stakeholders.
  • Are a visible leader with a proven record of empowering and leading employees successfully.
  • Are someone who can demonstrate a broad understanding of principals of financial management and marketing expertise necessary to assist with negotiations while using cost-benefit thinking to set priorities and manage expenditures.
  • Are an individual with intimate and vast knowledge of the Newfoundland and Labrador health care and delivery of emergency services.
  • Are a leader who models a high standard of ethics, is honest and fair in all dealings; and
  • Have the ability to formulate objectives and priorities by implementing plans consistently with the long-term interest of the organization in a global environment capitalizing on opportunities and managing risks.

Salary Range

  • $130,000 to $150,000 annually.

The Base Pay range may vary depending on the successful candidate or other relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience and education/training. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Medavie employees may participate in various performance-based incentive programs. Payments under these programs are discretionary and subject to both individual and organizational results.

While Medavie may use automated tools, including AI, to support application screening, candidates are expected to complete all recruitment interactions independently-without AI assistance-to ensure a fair and equitable process.
