(2-year contractual position)
A campus of Memorial University, the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) is North America's most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response, and technology transfer supporting ocean industries. Operating within MI's School of Ocean Technology, the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) provides research and development support, industry outreach, and scientific and technical advisory services to clients and partners, with expertise spanning ocean observation, ocean mapping, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), aerial drones, autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The Centre is based at The Launch, MI's ocean innovation centre and a cornerstone facility in Canada's ocean innovation ecosystem, located in Holyrood, Newfoundland and Labrador, approximately 35 minutes from St. John's. This team works at the cutting edge of ocean technology, in collaboration with a wide range of marine sectors locally, nationally, and internationally, to enhance the safety, efficiency, sustainability, and profitability of maritime pursuits through the application of technology.

The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technologists, researchers, and instructors supporting MI's ocean mapping and ocean observation education and training programs and undertaking client projects, industry outreach, and collaborative applied research and development with university, government, and industry partners. Clients span the fisheries, aquaculture, marine environmental monitoring, energy, marine transportation, and defence sectors. This role will also require the provision of technical support to instructors and students during field and laboratory-based activities in MI's ocean mapping and other programs, including equipment preparation, system demonstrations, and survey operations.
Duties include mobilizing, integrating, operating, troubleshooting, calibrating, and maintaining hydrographic, oceanographic, and remote-sensing systems used in teaching, applied research, and client projects. The successful applicant will work directly with ocean-sector clients, researchers, university partners, and technology developers and will contribute to or lead project scoping, proposal and budget development, field execution, data management, technical reporting, and deliverable production. Elements of travel, both within and outside Newfoundland and Labrador, can be expected, as well as participation in at-sea surveys and field programs on MI or external client vessels. The position involves travel within and outside Newfoundland and Labrador and participation in at-sea surveys and field programs aboard MI and external client vessels. This position is based at The Launch in Holyrood, NL.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have three to five years of relevant experience in marine surveying and a post-secondary diploma or undergraduate degree in hydrography, ocean mapping, geomatics, GIS, remote sensing, ocean technology, or a related discipline; an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Applicants must demonstrate practical knowledge of and experience with multibeam, sidescan, and other hydrographic sonar systems, including survey planning, system integration, data acquisition, processing, quality control, and deliverable production; proficiency with hydrographic acquisition software and with CARIS HIPS and SIPS or equivalent hydrographic processing software, including data editing, quality control, and surface generation; and proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and related GIS tools for spatial data management, analysis, visualization, and survey deliverable production is required. Experience with single-beam or sub-bottom sonar, oceanographic instrumentation, remote-sensing systems, or data acquisition using ROVs, aerial drones, ASVs, or AUVs would be an asset. Experience operating small vessels in support of hydrographic or oceanographic surveys, or a willingness to undertake appropriate vessel-operation training and certification, would also be an asset.
