ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
NL Health Services – Eastern Rural Zone invites applications for two (2) permanent full-time Fee-For-Service Emergency Physicians at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre in Burin, NL. These positions are available immediately.
The Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre provides health care services to a catchment area of approximately 18,000 people and serves as an important regional health centre for the Burin Peninsula, while also supporting two local Category B hospitals — the U.S. Memorial Health Centre in St. Lawrence and the Dr. S. Beckley Health Care Centre in Grand Bank.
The Emergency Department offers a predictable and equitable templated shift schedule. Emergency physician coverage is generally solo, with Emergency Nurse Practitioner support from 8:00am–4:00pm on weekdays. A limited amount of second Emergency Physician coverage is also utilized during peak periods as available.
Emergency Department shifts are 12 hours in duration with shift changeover at 8:00am and 8:00pm. Physicians will work an average of 13–14 Emergency Department shifts per month depending on the combination of day and night shifts.
A shared 0.5 FTE appointment may potentially be considered as an alternative to a full-time position, or in combination with other clinical duties such as hospitalist coverage, chemotherapy clinics, or family medicine clinic.
The Emergency Department has access to comprehensive specialist and hospital-based support including General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, and the Hospitalist Program. Additional resources include a dedicated portable ultrasound in the Emergency Department, 24-hour emergent CT scanning, and 24-hour Respiratory Therapist coverage.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
- Emergency room experience considered an asset
- CCFP or CCFP-EM certification considered an asset but not required
- Current ACLS and BLS certification required
- Current PALS and ATLS certification considered an asset but not required
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Must satisfy credentialing and privileging requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary health care team
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive emergency medicine care across 12-hour day and night shifts
- Day shift: 8:00am–8:00pm | Night shift: 8:00pm–8:00am
- Work solo Emergency physician coverage with Nurse Practitioner support during weekday daytime hours
- Utilize point-of-care ultrasound and 24-hour CT scanning resources as required
- Liaise with specialist services including General Surgery, Anesthesia, OBS/GYN, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, and Internal Medicine
- Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary Emergency Department team
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements
REMUNERATION
Remuneration is in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) guidelines for Category A Emergency Departments. Fee-for-service payments are made bi-weekly by NL Health Services.
Current Emergency Department rates:
- CAD 270.20 per hour: 08:00–18:00
- CAD 290.20 per hour: 18:00–00:00
- CAD 300.20 per hour: 00:00–08:00 and weekends
