Eastlink is looking for an engineer to join our Video Engineering team in Halifax, NS. This person will work amongst a highly collaborative team at our head office, regularly engaging with adjacent teams and vendors/suppliers to ensure high quality delivery of our video services.

Video Engineering is responsible for the full life cycle of video products and services offered to residential and enterprise customers, including a national streaming service (IPTV).

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • A national CDN (content delivery network) using containerized (Docker Swarm) environment and microservices which handle encryption, packaging and distribution of content.
  • Network storage planning, to support a cloud-based DVR service (nDVR).
  • IP network planning, particularly multicasting (IGMP, PIM, etc.).
  • Enterprise video solution design, with special consideration for DRM/encryption technology, scalable in-building video distribution and backhaul capacity planning.
  • Video signal acquisition, including many points of interconnect with content providers.
  • Ongoing planning for our national Video-on-Demand (VoD) platform.
  • Planning for the maintainability of our video solutions, including alarm/event, performance and security management.
  • Collaboration with many other teams, including Operations, Billing/Provisioning (BSS), IT, Internet Engineering, etc.
  • Planning of on-premises solutions, including residential and enterprise. This includes set-top-boxes, remote controls, companion apps across various streaming OS’s, consideration for TV sets, cabling, in both WIFI and Ethernet/Wired environments.
  • Planning for value-added services like Emergency Alert System (EAS), Ad-Insertion, and Simultaneous Substitution (Sim-Subbing).

The following attributes of the candidate will set them apart:

  • Self-starter and self-learner with high aptitude towards a broad range of networking and video technologies. Strong planning, organization, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to resolve ambiguous requirements and remove barriers to progress.
  • Curiosity of how solutions work, including network architecture and scaling of components. Willing to analyze packet captures and traces.
  • Enthusiasm towards understanding and optimizing video services.
  • A mind for automation through scripting, with a DevOps mindset applied to reduce tasks or make them more efficient.
  • Customer-focused, with a good ability to prioritize tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary in IT/Telecommunications/Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in ITC/Telecommunications, ideally in video engineering, is a strong asset.
  • Experience in video testing & QA is an asset.
  • Experience in bulk and commercial video delivery is an asset (e.g.: Hospitality Pro: Idiom, Bulk MDU, SMBs, Large Enterprise).
  • General IP network theory, especially multicasting (PIM, IGMP) is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of DOCSIS, XGS-PON, and WAN technologies (e.g.: MPLS) is an asset. Knowledge of broadband and video Customer-Premises-Equipment (CPE) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of telecom billing and provisioning system functions and API integrations is an asset.
  • Coding/Scripting knowledge is an asset.
  • Experience with streaming protocols (HLS, DASH, etc.), encoding (AVC/HEVC), rate shaping (VBR) and ABR ladder planning are all assets.
  • Experience with Tivo/Xperi streaming services, or Concurrent/Vecima platforms is an asset.
  • Experience in CDN network planning is an asset.
  • Knowledge of storage networking (e.g.: CEPH) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of DRM concepts (e.g.: Fairplay, Widevine) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of VoD/PPV platforms is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ad-Insertion technologies, and Canadian Sim-Subbing is an asset.
  • Knowledge of traditional QAM video distribution, particularly with Commscope’s DAC ecosystem, is an asset.
  • Knowledge of other traditional video delivery methods (e.g.: Bulk Analog) is an asset.
  • Cyber Security understanding is a strong asset.
