Do you excel at seeing the big picture of technology scale-up - aligning teams and strategies to bring game-changing innovations to mass production? Have you led the charge in taking a breakthrough product from the lab to the factory floor? As the Senior Director of Scale-Up at Rayleigh Solar Tech, you will take the helm of our roll-to-roll readiness department and guide the transformation of our perovskite solar technology into a commercial manufacturing reality.

At Rayleigh, we're building the lowest-cost source of clean electrons on the planet. Backed by world-class investors and a powerhouse technical team, we push the limits of deep tech to make solar radically more accessible. Our culture thrives on curiosity, urgency, and the pursuit of excellence - and we're looking for someone who shares that fire.

In this role, you will oversee the entire scale-up organization - a multidisciplinary team encompassing equipment engineering, process development, and quality - all focused on one goal: seamlessly scaling our technology from lab prototypes to gigawatt-scale production. You'll set the vision and strategy for our pilot line and manufacturing ramp-up, ensuring every process, tool, and person is aligned towards hitting cost and performance targets at scale. From guiding design-for-manufacturability decisions to building out pilot production capabilities, you'll be the architect of Rayleigh's journey from lab to fab. Your leadership will ensure that our roll-to-roll technology fulfills its promise to enhance throughput and reduce costs, making perovskite solar energy a viable, sustainable option on a global scale.

If you're an inspirational leader with deep technical roots, someone who has successfully navigated the perilous waters of scaling up cutting-edge hardware before, and who's driven by a vision of a cleaner future, then you might be the perfect fit to drive this mission.

Responsabilités

What You'll Do

Set the Vision & Strategy

  • Architect and execute Rayleigh's roadmap for roll-to-roll readiness, integrating cross-functional input from equipment, process, device, reliability, and commercial teams.
  • Oversee the development, validation, and optimization of all processes required to transition from sheet-to-sheet (S2S) to roll-to-roll (R2R) module fabrication.
  • Ensure every critical process and equipment block has a de-risked, validated pathway to scale with measurable performance and cost advantages.

Drive Throughput & Variance Reduction

  • Lead the team to achieve >10x improvements in module fabrication throughput over the next 6-12 months.
  • Define and track metrics for yield, CpK, and defect density to identify, monitor, and eliminate key sources of variability.
  • Deliver high-reliability, high-repeatability module output that accelerates learning and drives integration across the company.

Bridge Lab to Fab & Tech Transfer

  • Own the interface between Rocket (Performance & Stability) and the Scale-Up team to ensure design-for-manufacturability and design-for-reliability are embedded from the start.
  • Lead tech transfer from lab-scale cells to pilot and full-scale modules, including the design, construction, and commissioning of S2S and R2R pilot lines.
  • Coordinate performance tracking, gap closure, and reliability test integration to de-risk production ahead of gigawatt-scale deployment.

Own Infrastructure and Equipment Strategy

  • Lead procurement, commissioning, and installation of new equipment for both S2S and R2R lines.
  • Define facility needs and CapEx investment strategy for pilot and full-scale R2R production.
  • Work across leadership to prioritize CapEx and ensure effective resource allocation.

Build & Lead a World-Class Team

  • Hire, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team across equipment, process, reliability, and operations.
  • Instill a culture of first-principles thinking, fast iteration, and structured experimentation.
  • Clearly define roles, responsibilities, and growth paths for each member of the team.

Establish Data Infrastructure for Decision-Making

  • Drive implementation of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to centralize process, test, and reliability data.
  • Ensure real-time traceability and data collection throughout fabrication and reliability workflows.
  • Correlate fabrication inputs with final device outputs to enable predictive quality and root-cause analysis.
Qualifications

What You Bring

Experience Scaling Tech

  • 15+ years of experience in technology development and manufacturing, including significant leadership roles. You have direct, hands-on experience taking a new technology (ideally in solar, renewables, or semiconductors) from the lab or pilot phase to high-volume manufacturing.

Technical Depth

  • Advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Engineering or Physical Sciences (e.g., Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics). You bring strong technical depth, breadth across processes and systems, and fluency in roll-to-roll or thin-film manufacturing.

Strategic Vision

  • Proven ability to scale from first prototype to pilot and beyond, owning performance, cost, yield, and throughput. You are a strategic thinker who can set roadmap and technical direction while aligning resources across a growing organization.

Leadership & Team Building

  • Inspirational leader and team builder, able to coach, hire, and structure teams through phases of rapid growth. You bring a people-first approach that drives excellence through clarity, trust, and momentum.

Systems Thinking & Communication

  • Clear communicator with excellent systems thinking, equally comfortable diving into process data or presenting to executive stakeholders. You can connect technical decisions to business outcomes and inspire action across functions.

Passion for the Mission:

  • Above all, you're motivated by the impact of bringing low-cost, clean energy to the world. The idea of leading the commercialization of a breakthrough solar technology excites you. You're willing to pour your expertise and heart into this challenge because you know how high the stakes are for our company and the planet.
