LABORATORY FACILITIES TECHNICIAN I (BAND LEVEL 3)

(Two Year Contractual Position)

DUTIES

The Laboratory Facilities Technician I will perform semi-skilled and manual work in a variety of support tasks for the Department of Ocean Sciences. Duties include, but are not limited to, installing, repairing and maintaining fish holding facilities and related plumbing and water treatment equipment, including ultraviolet sterilizers, filters, and pumps; assisting with the design, construction and installation of various apparatus for departmental, laboratory, and experimental use; transporting packages, including dangerous goods, delivering and installing compressed gas cylinders, supplies, and equipment within the Department of Ocean Sciences; operating a variety of stationary and hand tools such as table, band, and miter saws, routers, drills, grinders, etc.; performing facility monitoring and rounds; assisting the Field Services Unit with research activities and the collection of live organisms and samples; and performing other related duties as required. Responsibilities will include operating a variety of biological and oceanographic sampling equipment, which includes, but is not limited to, beach seines, plankton nets, Secchi disks, CTD, bottom grabs, Niskin bottles and fish traps; as well as operating a Zodiac and Boston Whaler and serving as a dive tender when required, including multi-day overnight trips. The incumbent will assist other staff, faculty, and students with various jobs as needed, and other related duties as directed by the Laboratory Services Supervisor. Some heavy lifting will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable experience (3-5 years) in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of fish holding facilities and related plumbing; graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by training in the repair and maintenance of aquatic animal housing is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Demonstrated boat-handling and seamanship skills in navigable coastal waters are essential for this role. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Diving and dive tendering experience, basic carpentry skills, experience working with FRP and epoxies, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office would be considered assets.

SALARY $47,057 - $55,196 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
