The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Manager, Tailings and Dams Global to join our Dams Geotech team in Sudbury.

This is a permanent hybrid position in Sudbury.

As a Senior Manager, Tailings and Dams Global, ensures the integrity of the geotechnical structure by managing the scope of work and budget requirements for all aspects of geotechnical structure management, including liaison with Engineering of Records (EoR), Independence Tailings Review Board (ITRB) and internal teams such as operations, planning, and environment. Expertise in managing tailings storage facility governance (deep knowledge of IBRAM, MAC, CDA, ANCOLD, ICOLD, other guidance documents). Your experience and skill will allow you to contribute to long-term planning of tailings and water management facilities, including tailings deposition plans

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Identifying and treating risks associated with tailings and water retaining structures throughout the lifecycle of the structures.
  • Managing compliance with systems and actions plans to control and mitigate risks
  • Incorporating closure planning throughout the lifecycle of the tailing's facility
  • Ensure Emergency Response and Preparedness Plans (EPRPs) are aligned according to the level of risk of structures
  • Building technical capabilities of the team, providing coaching opportunities and transferring knowledge to the geotechnical team to understand and raise risks.
  • Implement a risk treatment plan with appropriate contingency plans for identified risks.
About You

Education:

  • Master's degree with a specialization in geotechnical engineering or geosciences.
  • Registration to a professional Engineer designation is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 11 years of geotechnical and tailings experience, including tailings storage facility design, construction, operations and closure of tailings and water storage facilities, and related experience in technical and operational roles.

Skills:

  • Experience in geotechnical engineering for tailings facilities, water storage facilities and slope management, including dam analysis, tailings characterization and instrumentation technologies.
  • Experience of influencing senior business leaders.
  • Experience managing teams of employees and contractors.
  • Expertise in managing tailings storage facility governance (deep knowledge of IBRAM, MAC, CDA, ANCOLD, ICOLD, other guidance documents).
  • Ability to lead teams focused on dam safety and guided others in the application of critical thinking.
  • Flexibility and be energized by the prospect of working on any of Vale sites around the world.
  • Good experience in coaching and mentoring team members
  • Experience delivering high-quality geotechnical services.
  • Built and sustained excellent relationships with other teams within organization and external parties.
