Job Title: Senior Payroll Associate (9-Month Fixed Term Contract)

At Emera, you will be part of an inclusive, respectful workplace where everyone is welcomed and supported. Reporting to the Payroll Manager, we are currently looking to hire a Senior Payroll Associate on a term contract, for a minimum of nine (9) months with the opportunity to be extended.

We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced, team environment. You will join our payroll team is made up of an energetic and positive group of professionals, providing opportunity to learn from and be supported by a wider group. They are active in the National Payroll Association and continuously stay up to date on industry developments, helping us to continuously improve processes.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, processing, and/or reviewing Emera's bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly payrolls in accordance with company policies, collective agreements, and legislative/regulatory requirements;
  • Preparing and/or reviewing monthly payroll journal entries;
  • Preparing various monthly and quarterly payroll related account and source deduction reconciliations, including investigation of variances identified;
  • Assisting with year-end related payroll tasks, including setting new rates in the system, accrual rollovers, taxable benefit calculations, STIP processing, and T4 preparation and submission;
  • Reviewing and submitting payroll files for RRSP, TFSA, and pension plans;
  • Responding to payroll inquiries from both internal and external stakeholders;
  • Identifying and implementing process improvement initiatives, including regularly updating process documentation;
  • Being responsible for internal control over financial reporting in accordance with Emera's Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) program; and
  • Assisting in ad hoc requests, projects, processes, and/or other work as required.

What skills will make you successful?

You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • You possess or are working towards a designation from the Canadian Payroll Association (Payroll Compliance Practitioner "PCP") and at least three (3) years of experience processing full cycle payroll;
  • Enthusiasm to adopt and embrace digital technology, as well as a high level comfort with Excel;
  • Provide a high level of customer service and have excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills;
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage competing obligations;
  • Proven problem-solving and professional judgement skills;
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles; and
  • Experience with PeopleSoft payroll software would be considered an asset.
