The Animal Care Committee (ACC) is responsible for providing essential regulatory oversight for Memorial University's animal care and use program. The ACC Coordinator serves as the main point of contact between the Committee and faculty members during the protocol review process, facilitating the timely review of investigators' animal care and use protocols.

DUTIES

Reporting to the University Veterinarian, the ACC Coordinator independently manages the administrative processes and operations of the ACC. Working closely with the Chair of the ACC and its members, the Coordinator acts as a visible presence within Memorial's research community to help communicate institutional and Animal Care Committee policies and procedures, and to maintain the database for training laboratory personnel on humane and efficient animal handling techniques. As an ex-officio member of the institutional ACC, the Coordinator enhances the development and maintenance of policies and procedures as required by federal regulatory agencies, and is responsible for providing input on committee processes, administrative guidance in the coordination of ACC meetings, pre-screening of research and teaching applications, and initial consultation to Principal Investigators regarding the institution's ACC approval process. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the ACC and Animal Care and Veterinary Resources' website, as well as performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (3-5 years) in scientific biomedical research, animal or human ethics boards, or compliance administration; graduation with an undergraduate degree in an appropriate field (e.g., life sciences) from a recognized university is required; or an equivalent combination of education and training may be considered. Administrative experience, including scientific writing and minute-taking, a strong knowledge of scientific terminology and practices, as well as strong proficiency with personal computers, Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, is essential for this role. The ideal candidate will have a strong IT background that includes developing and maintaining data management systems for data extraction and periodic reports; excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines with multiple and complex tasks; excellent analytical skills necessary to identify potential problems; and excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills, as well as sensitivity and discretion regarding confidential material. A broad understanding of CCAC Guidelines and policy statements, as well as institutional, provincial, and national animal research guidelines; experience with website maintenance and design; and experience implementing software systems would all be considered assets.
