BACKGROUND

Memorial University is one of the largest universities in Atlantic Canada. As the province's only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the education and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador, offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to nearly 18,000 students. The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) at Memorial University is a joint initiative between the Faculties of Business Administration (FBA) and Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) that serves students from all disciplines across Memorial's campuses. The mission of the MCE is to help every Memorial University student find and grow their inner entrepreneur. Its vision is to help Memorial University become the leading entrepreneurial university in Canada. The MCE provides innovative students at Memorial University with foundational training, guidance, access to funding, connections and community to create businesses and develop entrepreneurial thinking. The MCE provides programming to over 300 students interested in entrepreneurship annually. MCE­supported startups have collectively generated nearly $14M in revenue, created over 200 full-time equivalent positions, and raised over $58M in venture capital. The MCE was recognized as one of the top emerging entrepreneurship centres in the world in 2019 and 2020, and received the GlobalNL Community Impact Award in 2020.

We are seeking an inspiring and entrepreneurial leader to accelerate the development of entrepreneurship and innovation at Memorial University. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the centre's mission and vision.

DUTIES

Reporting to the Deans of FBA and FEAS, the Director will provide strong, inspirational, creative, and collaborative leadership and sound management for the MCE. Experienced in entrepreneurial environments, the successful candidate will assume overall responsibility for setting the vision and strategy for the MCE in alignment with the strategic directions of FBA and FEAS to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This position provides strategic oversight to fulfill the MCE's mandate and support early-stage entrepreneurs by creating, designing, assessing and supervising the implementation of relevant programming and activities to build upon the Memorial and provincial entrepreneurial ecosystem. The Director is also responsible for the centre's daily administrative operations, including finances and human resources (budgeting, hiring, overseeing staff, employee relations, policies and procedures, etc.) to ensure efficiency and effectiveness; leading fund development and writing grant proposals; increasing the diversity of student support and participation; analyzing student engagement data and reporting on the MCE's impact; developing and maintaining partnerships with local, national and international entities and ensuring a high standard of community engagement; leading communication, advocacy and stakeholder consultations (MCE alumni, Advisory Board meetings, etc.); and performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (5 years or more) in leadership in an entrepreneurial environment; graduation with a bachelor's degree, preferably in business or engineering, is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. The ideal candidate will be proactive and possess excellent organizational, written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills. The ability to work effectively and under pressure in a diverse academic context is essential. Superior communication skills are critical for building lasting relationships with key ecosystem entities. A master's degree is considered an asset, as is experience in entrepreneurship, building a start-up organization, strategy development, staff or budget management, venture capital, technology commercialization, grant writing, business development, and working within university settings.
