BACKGROUND

The Navigate Entrepreneurship Centre (Navigate), based at Grenfell Campus and the College of the North Atlantic (CNA), Corner Book is hiring a Makerspace Coordinator to run its recently relocated Makerspace at the Centre for Research and Innovation. In 2018, Navigate launched a Business Incubator and Makerspace, which operated until the COVID-19 pandemic, but were put on pause temporarily. Now, Navigate will once again have three key components: providing business advice, coaching, and mentorship to entrepreneurs and business start-ups on both Grenfell and CNA campuses; running a business incubator; and hosting a Makerspace (both of which will be based at the Centre for Research and Innovation). Navigate facilitates the early-growth stage to launch and incubation of ventures; assists in the commercialization of new technologies; nurtures the entrepreneurial culture in western Newfoundland; and promotes sustainable economic development in the region.

DUTIES

The Makerspace Coordinator will manage the Centre for Research and Innovation Makerspaces, facilities that provide a flexible environment to empower the community to imagine, create, and prototype products using both traditional techniques and new digital technologies. In this context, the Makerspace Coordinator will be responsible for day-to-day operations and oversight of all the makerspace facilities, employees and interns working at the Makerspace; assist users in the development of projects and products; be responsible for fundraising to support the operation of the makerspace in the local and regional community; and be knowledgeable of, and responsible for, the maintenance and upkeep of a wide range of tools and equipment. The Coordinator will oversee both the "clean" and "dirty" Makerspaces at CRI, which house digital technologies and craft supplies, and wood and metal fabrication tools, respectively. The incumbent will also be responsible for embedding maker principles through innovative and uncommon learning experiences, empowering the community (including Grenfell and CNA faculty and students) to use technology and making to develop the skills required to introduce new products, processes, and services. Additional duties include developing, implementing, and coaching design thinking, computational thinking, and systems thinking; creating interdisciplinary learning opportunities; developing and maintaining effective community and industry relationships with a wide range of partners, such as schools, libraries, industry associations, craft groups, artist organizations, and grassroots maker associations; preparing, organizing, setting up, and coordinating makerspace fairs that showcase faculty, student or community achievement; developing appropriate policies and procedures and following safe working procedures developed for the Makerspace; coordinating all aspects of makerspace programming; providing supervision, training, and scheduling of makerspace volunteers and employees; maintaining budgets, reports, and statistics; maintaining all makerspace materials, tools, and equipment; and performing other related duties as required. Flexible work hours are required.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Makerspace Coordinator will have a strong technology background, including familiarity with a wide range of tools and equipment, and a collaborative approach across a broad collection of academics, students, businesses, and community members. An acute awareness of and comfort with interdisciplinary and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) principles, and the ability to connect these principles to the regional entrepreneurial and start-up communities, as well as communities of makers and craftspeople, is essential, along with a Master's degree in a related field. This role requires the competencies of an inspirational coach and educator who can influence, motivate, and encourage; awareness of emerging technologies and trends within the maker movement; and the ability to build strong user relationships by providing solutions and promoting effective making practices. An equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.

SALARY $67,414 - $91,929 per annum (Management and Professional)
