The Pipelayer Foreman is a vital position for MacKay Contracting Ltd. to provide direction and leadership to the utilities installations crew ensuring the highest quality product and service is delivered. This role works closely with the Civil Superintendent to plan work and coordinate the requirements of specified projects to ensure all necessary resources (people, materials, and equipment) are in place each day.

Location & Hours:

This role will have a home base at the Cranbrook office located at 1600A Theatre Rd., Cranbrook B.C., however your time will be spent on the project sites (in and out of town) that MacKay is currently operating. Hours will vary on a project-to-project basis and overtime will be required on an as-needed basis to ensure projects are on schedule.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Lead and direct a team of pipe layers, general labourer and equipment operators
  • Act as an intermediary between civil team and the Civil Superintendent
  • Perform work in accordance with all organizational, as well as provincial and federal health and safety standards and legislation, ensuring highest standard of safety is upheld
  • Perform daily site assessments, including identification of potential work site hazards
  • Coordinate with Civil Superintendent on work plan according to Project schedule
  • Locate existing piping systems, and remove sections that need to be replaced
  • Measure and configure pipe routes
  • Ensure appropriate material and tools are transported to the worksite, and ensure proper functioning off all tools prior to utilization
  • Prepare area for pipe installation, performing all necessary excavation preparation utilizing equipment or when necessary through manual digging, including slope and elevation determination
  • Perform the installation of pipe with the utmost standards in quality while keeping up with production targets
  • Install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels. Check slopes for conformance to requirements
  • Ensure all trenches are dug according to construction drawings including adherence to all specified excavation levels and depths
  • Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices
  • Grade and level trench bases using tamping machines or through the use of hand tools
  • Place manholes and catch basins
  • Provide manual labour assistance as required
  • Maintain organizational services, facilities, and equipment
  • Conduct tests including infiltration, exfiltration, pressure and bacteriological testing
  • Maintain accurate site records including as-built information, photos, changes
  • Train pipelaying crew to meet work requirements, and coordinate with team daily
  • Report Project status and communicate daily with Civil Superintendent
  • Lead daily toolbox meetings and pre-task inspections
  • Care of Equipment (including light vehicles)
  • General (Professional) image of personnel, equipment, vehicles, and sites
  • Additional duties as may be assigned

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 3-5 years previous experience with underground utility installation and replacement on existing infrastructure
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence
  • Ability to read and understand civil/construction design plans
  • Position requires a high level of initiative and a positive attitude
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Must be able to give and follow both oral and written instructions
  • Proven ability to generate and deliver reports that provide useful insights into Project details
  • Demonstrates a good-natured, cooperative attitude
  • Ability to deliver in a professional manner guidance/coaching/disciplinary action
  • Ability to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs.)
