Job Description Overview:

Our client is a leading international heavy civil contractor looking for a new Area Construction Operations Manger to lead the Calgary office. In this exciting role you will be responsible for safely overseeing and coordinating multiple projects to achieve optimal financial and timeline outcomes within the Calgary and greater Alberta region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and supervise multiple project plans and project executions within a single region in one state.
  • Offer technical insights to project proposals by collaborating closely with estimators, engineers, project managers, and bid evaluation committees.
  • Ensure adherence to Company and project safety protocols at all project sites, maintaining safety compliance for the Company and subcontractors.
  • Review proposed project blueprints to guarantee alignment with contract cost estimates, production targets, quality standards, and schedules.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to confirm accurate personnel allocation for projects and assign recruitment efforts to meet upcoming project requirements.
  • Complete additional tasks as directed by management.
  • Verify and ensure project expenses are coded correctly for precise financial reporting. Identify and implement necessary training or corrective measures, if required.
  • Provide technical support and resources to project management teams, ensuring projects stay on track and within the designated budget.
  • Assess weekly and monthly project status updates and evaluate whether schedules or plans align with project objectives.
  • Examine project activities to confirm compliance with government regulatory agencies and coordinate with these agencies for permit requirements.
  • Support project managers with client relations, presentations, and change order requests, as necessary.
  • Address and oversee insurance matters, as required.
  • Participate in selecting and finalizing contracts with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Monitor and/or audit project cost controls, budgets, invoicing, estimates, and project forecasting, providing input to executive management regarding project operations and status.
  • Stay informed about Company values and strategic plans.
  • Uphold published corporate policies.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Prior experience in heavy civil construction is essential.
  • Proven experience managing construction teams is necessary.
  • Bachelor's Degree is a plus.
  • Experience managing heavy civil/highway projects, construction, and financial risk management.
  • Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certification is preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • In-depth understanding of complex construction methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to manage claims processes and negotiate with clients on project matters.
  • Proven ability to lead multiple teams from diverse functions towards shared objectives.
  • Robust conflict management abilities.
  • Strong, established leadership skills.
  • Capacity to identify top talent and develop growth opportunities and training to mentor and build internal teams.
