Senior Commissioning and Start-up (CSU) Operator

Location: North East of Grande Prairie, AB

Overview

S2F Global is seeking a Senior Commissioning and Start-Up (CSU) Operator to bring a sour gas plant online. The main driver is to assist and advise to ensure a smooth start up in the Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU), so we are looking for a seasoned sulphur plant specialist with 20+ years in sour gas processing and multiple SRU start-ups behind them.

Key Responsibilities

The Operator's first priority is to assist and advise with the plant start-up and apply special attention in getting the SRU running reliably. Beyond the hands-on operation, they will act as the site's sulphur plant subject matter expert during start-up. The operator will be required to assist with start up in all areas.

Sulphur Plant Start-up and Troubleshooting

  • Assist with start-up of the Claus / Super Claus SRU: reaction furnace light-off, waste heat boiler warm-up, converter and catalyst bed heat-up, and sulphur condenser and pit operation.

  • Diagnose the current mechanical issues in the SRU and work with maintenance planners on repair plans for piping, vessels, pumps, and rotating equipment.

  • Operate the waste heat boiler and steam system through start-up and load changes, in line with ABSA requirements.

  • Tune air-to-acid-gas ratio and tail gas performance to meet sulphur recovery and emissions targets.

Commissioning and Pre-Start-up

  • Assist and advise with any Pre-Start-up Safety Review (PSSR) as directed by the client.

  • Assist with any start-up, operating, shutdown, and emergency procedures as directed by the client.

  • Assist and advise as required in all process units as directed by or requested by the client.

Safety, Training, and Handover

  • Mentor and train site operators on sulphur plant and amine operation if required.

  • Investigate and follow up on start-up incidents and near misses if required.

  • Complete handover notes of any findings and or improvements for the permanent operations team.

Required Qualifications
  • 20+ years of operations experience in sour gas processing plants.

  • 10+ years of hands-on operation of multi-stage Claus sulphur plants, with direct Super Claus tail gas experience.

  • At least two full commissioning and start-ups of a sulphur recovery complex, ideally including a greenfield start-up.

  • Strong amine or Sulphinol sweetening experience, including sour water stripping.

  • Experience running a plant as operator in charge or panel operator during start-up.

  • Proven troubleshooting of SRU mechanical and process problems, including waste heat boilers and steam systems.

  • Experience writing operating and start-up procedures and supporting PSSRs.

  • Deep-cut or refrigeration experience with deethanizer, depropanizer, and debutanizer columns, is an asset.

  • Field, inlet, and sales compression and condensate stabilization experience, is an asset.

  • Turnaround coordination or major shutdown and start-up planning, is an asset.

  • Experience training operators or supervising a sulphur plant crew, is an asset.

  • Background at large Alberta sour gas complexes or upgrader sulphur units, is an asset.

Certifications and Tickets:

Candidates should hold the following, current and valid in Alberta.

  • 2nd Class Power Engineering certificate (ABSA) minimum; 1st Class strongly preferred.

  • H2S Alive.

  • Standard First Aid and CPR.

  • Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation to site.

Schedule and Working Conditions

This is an intensive start-up assignment, so expect long, near-continuous shifts until the plant reaches stable operation.

  • Short-term contract tied to start-up completion.

  • Extended hours and on-call availability during commissioning.

  • Work in a sour gas environment with H2S exposure risk and full PPE requirements.

  • Outdoor work in northern Alberta weather conditions.
