Working Foreperson – Bridge Construction Position Summary Reporting to the Superintendent, the Working Foreperson leads a bridge construction crew while actively participating in hands-on field work. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of daily construction activities, crew productivity, quality workmanship, and short-term planning. The Working Foreperson coordinates labour, equipment, materials, and subcontractor activities within assigned work areas, ensuring all work is completed in accordance with project drawings, specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a construction crew while actively performing hands-on work to achieve daily production goals.
  • Plan, organize, and assign daily work activities, ensuring crew members understand project priorities, schedules, and site constraints.
  • Maintain a strong field presence by supervising workmanship, productivity, and safe work practices.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job training to crew members.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with project safety plans, applicable legislation, and established safety procedures.
  • Lead daily hazard assessments and verify appropriate controls are implemented before work begins.
  • Conduct and document daily toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe work procedures, and equipment inspections.
  • Assist with short-term planning by identifying upcoming labour, equipment, material, and access requirements.
  • Monitor daily and weekly productivity, minimizing downtime and maintaining efficient workflow.
  • Track labour, equipment usage, and production quantities, reporting progress and variances to the Superintendent.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, and cost effectiveness while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Support daily record keeping, including crew hours, equipment hours, production tracking, and field documentation.
  • Verify work is completed in accordance with project drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Confirm layout, dimensions, elevations, and tolerances, and promptly communicate discrepancies to project supervision.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and protect completed work from damage.
  • Perform and supervise bridge construction activities, including excavation, formwork, reinforcing steel installation, concrete placement, demolition, structural work, bearing and joint installation, drainage systems, rehabilitation, and restoration, as applicable.
  • Provide regular updates to the Superintendent regarding project progress, resource requirements, safety concerns, and schedule impacts.
  • Maintain field documentation, including daily reports, photographs, delivery records, inspection support, and production tracking.
  • Communicate professionally with inspectors, consultants, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Follow all organizational policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the responsibilities of the role.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in bridge or heavy civil construction, including field leadership responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead crews, coordinate daily work activities, and deliver safe, high-quality results within project schedules.
  • Strong knowledge of bridge construction methods, including formwork, reinforcing steel, concrete placement, demolition, structural construction, and rehabilitation.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety practices and high-risk activities, including lifting and rigging, working at heights, traffic control, and concrete operations.
  • Experience maintaining field documentation, including daily reports, production tracking, timekeeping, and photo records.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and light construction equipment required to perform field work.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
  • Gold Seal Foreperson certification or equivalent is considered an asset.
