Environmental Department Head – Vancouver (Confidential Search)

A leading employee-owned engineering consulting firm is seeking an Environmental Department Head to join its Vancouver office. This is a confidential leadership search being managed by a recruiter on behalf of the organization.

About the Organization

The client is a multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm operating across North America, known for delivering technically strong, relationship-driven solutions across a wide range of infrastructure and environmental projects.

As an employee-owned business, the organization fosters a culture where people are genuinely invested in the work they deliver and the long-term success of their clients and teams. Their approach is centred on technical quality, collaboration, and doing work properly — not taking shortcuts.

The Vancouver office is in a growth phase, particularly within the environmental practice, and is supported by established teams across Canada and the U.S.

The Opportunity

This is a senior leadership role responsible for building, leading, and developing an emerging environmental team in Vancouver.

The successful candidate will have the autonomy to shape and grow the local practice, while contributing to a wide range of environmental consulting services across multiple sectors.

Core areas of work include (but are not limited to): site assessment, remediation and risk management, hydrogeology and groundwater studies, emergency response, hazardous building materials and demolition support, solid waste management, and geothermal applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a multidisciplinary environmental team of engineers, scientists, and technicians
  • Oversee technical delivery across a range of environmental projects
  • Manage department performance including revenue, utilization, proposal success, and client satisfaction
  • Support recruitment, retention, and team development strategies
  • Lead and contribute to business development and proposal preparation
  • Work closely with internal disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and identify new opportunities
  • Mentor and develop junior and intermediate staff
  • Coordinate with external consultants and partners where required
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture across all work

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, Geological Engineering, or related field
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC or equivalent
  • 12+ years of environmental engineering experience
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership or management capacity
  • Strong background in environmental consulting and project delivery
  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage competing priorities
  • Experience developing and maintaining client relationships
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable contributing to business development and proposals (asset)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Approved Professional under Contaminated Sites Regulation considered an asset

What's Offered

  • Competitive compensation in the range of $150,000 – $180,000 (based on experience)
  • Full benefits from day one
  • Paid sick time and flexible working arrangements
  • Hybrid work model
  • Professional development and leadership growth opportunities
