Position Overview
The Finance Manager is responsible for leading the full finance function within a multi-program, fund-based nonprofit organization. This role combines financial oversight, reporting, compliance, and audit coordination with hands-on involvement in key accounting areas.
The Finance Manager will act as the primary finance lead, overseeing the work of a Bookkeeper (AP/AR and basic records) while ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all financial information.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Oversight & Close Management
- Oversee and execute month-end and year-end close processes
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial records prepared by the Bookkeeper
- Maintain general ledger integrity and ensure accurate financial data
- Step in on complex accounting areas as required
2. Fund Accounting & Compliance
- Manage accounting across multiple programs and restricted funding streams
- Ensure appropriate revenue recognition and expense allocation by fund/program
- Maintain compliance with funder and regulatory requirements (Ontario Health, Ministry of Health, City of Toronto, CRA, etc.)
- Oversee deferred revenue, restricted contributions, and capital funding tracking
3. Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Develop variance analysis and internal management reports
- Support Board and Finance Committee reporting
- Ensure consistency and reliability of all financial outputs
4. Audit & External Reporting
- Lead audit preparation, including working papers and supporting schedules
- Act as the primary liaison with external auditors
- Coordinate audit timelines and deliverables
- Oversee completion of funder and regulatory filings (e.g., T3010, AIR, MIS reporting)
5. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support development of annual budgets across programs
- Monitor financial performance and investigate variances
- Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts
- Provide financial insights to support leadership decision-making
6. Process, Controls & Supervision
- Supervise and review the work of the Bookkeeper (AP/AR, basic accounting)
- Establish and maintain internal controls and finance policies
- Document and improve finance processes and SOPs
- Identify system and process improvement opportunities (e.g., QBO optimization)
Working Relationships
Reports to: Executive Director / Senior Leadership
Oversees: Bookkeeper (AP/AR and basic accounting)
Works with: Program Managers, Board / Finance Committee
External stakeholders: Auditors, funders, regulators
Qualifications & Experience
- CPA designation (or near completion) preferred
- 5–8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
- Experience in nonprofit / fund accounting strongly preferred
- Experience supervising junior accounting staff or bookkeepers
- Strong experience with audit coordination and financial reporting

Compensation
Salary Range: $80,000 – $90,000 annually
(Commensurate with experience and nonprofit sector alignment)
Important Role Note
This is a lean finance structure. While transactional accounting support is available, the Finance Manager is responsible for review, oversight, and ownership of the full finance function, including audit, reporting, and compliance.
