PURPOSE OF GROUP / UNIT:

The Operations Group works as a team to plan and efficiently execute processes to provide high-quality services to clients. This position requires Union membership.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

As a member of the plant operations team, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising the day-to-day activities of the Operators and ensuring a productive, harmonious working team. The role includes overall responsibility for the safety, quality, productivity, and training of the Operators.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision

  • Coordinate and monitor the activities of the Operators within the Pilot Plant operations, ensuring process activities are carried out safely and effectively, within the guidelines of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and within GMP and HACCP standards, as well as procedures listed in the Teamwork Systems.
  • Ensure projects are completed within budgeted hours, achieving specifications as stated, including product yield and provide timely reports.
  • Coach, develop, and maximize employee potential to ensure a competent and motivated team.
  • Ensure positive and productive work relationships are maintained within the department and company. Monitor workload levels and offer support when necessary.
  • Show a positive work attitude in performing assigned tasks. Work effectively with others as a team, and ensure positive and productive work relationships are maintained within the department and company.
  • Ensure all operators are trained in the understanding and troubleshooting of all equipment and processes.
  • Recommend improvements to increase productivity and the processing capability of the plant.
  • Maintain the plant in a clean and safe state.
  • Maintain a knowledge and awareness of plant safety and fire prevention as part of each process execution, which may vary from process to process.
  • Attends meetings and communicates operational information (scheduling, operations, etc.).

Records/Reporting

  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date records are maintained. Provide accurate and timely communication to other Shift Supervisors and shifts to convey information to others on processes, methods, and activities.
  • Help develop and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) pertaining to process activities, safety, training, etc.
  • Produce all appropriate documentation, including accident reports/investigations, incident reports, etc.
  • Authorize the entries and perform staff reviews.

Other

  • Responsible for building security (open and lockup) during evening and night shifts.
  • Provide Operator relief/backup as required.
  • Enforce and adhere to policies, safety standards, regulations, and protocol.
  • Assist in providing training as per the training program.

  4. Familiarity with plant systems and equipment operation. Knowledge of GMP, WHMIS, HACCP and TS is a requirement.

  8. Ability to multitask and display leadership in conflict situations.
  9. Initiative and ability to work independently.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma is a requirement. Two years of post-secondary education (with courses in chemistry, sciences, math, etc.) is an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years working experience in a related plant environment/food industry and overall knowledge/familiarity with a large variety of processing equipment.
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
