THE ROLE

Our client is one of the longest standing public sector organizations and is currently looking for a Budget Support Accountant to fill a full time permanent position.The organization offers a stable environment and a family like culture.It is situated in the heart of Vancouver and is conveniently located near public transit.Reporting to the Budgeting Manager, the Budget Support Accountant would be working directly with budget holders, reviewing and monitoring expenditure against budgets, investigating variances and a lot more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and financial guidance to internal departments and staff managing designated funding streams
  • Maintain accurate accounting records for assigned funding programs and support related financial operations
  • Coordinate and compile budget submissions for government or external funding, in collaboration with program leadership
  • Review and validate funding agreements and related budgets to ensure consistency with internal financial plans
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis, including insights on performance and variance
  • Monitor expenditures against approved budgets, investigate variances, recommend corrective actions, and advise on budget adjustments
  • Support program managers with financial planning and help build their understanding of budgeting and reporting requirements
  • Prepare detailed working papers and schedules to support financial statements and other reporting obligations
  • Reconcile funding received with entries in the financial system and validate against external reporting documents
  • Create ad hoc financial reports for internal use and for submission to funding bodies or stakeholders
  • Act as a liaison with external auditors, providing relevant documentation and responding to inquiries
  • Train program and finance staff on internal accounting procedures and financial systems

Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school and active membership in good standing with a recognized Canadian CPA body
  • At least five years of progressive experience in a senior accounting role
  • In-depth understanding of Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); exposure to Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) is a strong asset
  • Background in financial planning or budget coordination within a government-funded or public sector setting is preferred
  • Proven ability to:
  • Prioritize tasks and manage tight or conflicting deadlines
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Exercise sound judgment and solve complex problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional and collaborative approach
  • Advanced analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials or another ERP system is an asset
  • Must successfully complete an Excel assessment
