THE ROLE
Our client, a dynamic and growing company in the construction and real estate development sector, is seeking a strong Assistant Controller to join their finance team in Richmond, BC. This role is ideal for someone with a blend of technical accounting skills and leadership acumen, who thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for full-cycle accounting, project accounting, and financial reporting, while also mentoring a team and driving continuous improvement across accounting operations. This is a hands-on leadership role that offers the opportunity to work closely with executive leadership, support strategic financial decisions, and contribute to long-term organizational success.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership to the accounting team, overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, project accounting, and general accounting functions.
- Mentor and support staff development, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team culture.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage the full financial close cycle, including reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analysis.
- Lead budgeting and forecasting processes across multiple projects and entities.
- Maintain accurate cash flow projections, job cost reports, and customer billing reviews.
- Prepare monthly loan draws and related documentation for development projects.
- Oversee payroll review and compliance with statutory requirements.
- Recommend and implement improvements to internal controls, processes, and ERP systems.
- Collaborate with external auditors and tax professionals as needed.
- Support Sage ERP implementation and optimize reporting tools.
- Communicate with key stakeholders to support strategic decision-making with financial insights.
Requirements
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a focus on full-cycle and project accounting.
- Experience in the real estate development or construction industry is essential.
- CPA designation (or near completion).
- Proven leadership experienceable to guide, support, and develop accounting staff.
- Hands-on approach with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Experience with Sage Accounting Software or other ERP systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general MS Office tools.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
