ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation is looking for a Registered Nurse to join our team. Reporting to the Clinical Lead, this position will conduct therapeutic interventions, administer care and provide health advice to members within practice guidelines and other acts and legislation that govern practice. This position is front facing for the ?akisqnuk First Nation Health Center and will act as the community health resource.

Responsibilities include promoting and maintaining the health of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations while adhering to the principles of primary health care. This includes a strong emphasis on health promotion, disease and injury prevention, protection of population health, and, as necessary, a focus on curative, urgent, and emergent care, as well as rehabilitation and supportive or palliative care.

ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation (″ʔAFN″) is a member Community of the Ktunaxa Nation. ʔAFN exists for the Community. Externally, we are here to serve the Community, and internally, we are our own Community, comprised of different departments unified by our Vision, Mission, and Values. As a team, through our own roles and departments, the ʔAFN Organization works together to achieve our strategic plan “Our Thinking” and continue to progress and move our community forward.

Note: This position is on-call and casual with no guarantee of weekly hours.

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Connect with patients in a clinical setting and administer care, provide triage, and employ current pain management theories.
  • Perform comprehensive health assessments and develop client care plans.
  • Conduct needs assessments for advanced care and medical directives.
  • Provide interventions based on medical directives or orders.
  • Assess community health needs.
  • Conduct clinic visits for preventative care and early screening.
  • Work closely with partner health care providers and consult with clients' Primary Care Physicians.
  • Organize family-focused health clinics, foot care clinics, and case management processes.
  • Monitor communicable disease reports and provide infection control.
  • Provide prenatal and postnatal screening and support services.
  • Offer peer counseling, referrals, and follow-up services.
  • Implement public health and education programs, including Well Baby Clinics, STI Counseling, Prenatal/Postnatal care, and various other public health initiatives.
  • Provide immunizations and assist in organizing immunization clinics.
  • Conduct client/family home visits and make referrals to other agencies when necessary.
  • Provide after-care services, post-hospital discharge, surgeries, or procedures.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a registered nurse
  • Current practicing license with the College of Registered Nurses of BC
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Communicable Disease Control Certificate is an asset
  • Experience working with First Nations / Indigenous communities is an asset
  • Knowledge of language, history and culture of the ʔakisqnuk band is an asset
  • Ability to act efficiently and effectively in crisis situation
  • Strong communication skills, both written, verbal and listening
  • Excellent attention to detail when reviewing health details and creating reports
  • Strong customer services skills when working with community members
  • NOTE: A criminal check and vulnerable sector search will be conducted on the successful applicant

  • Competitive pay ($40.21 to $54.28 per hour depending on education and experience)
