Respiratory Therapy Clinical Extern (RTCE)

Department: Respiratory Therapy

Hours of Work: Casual Position; Rotating Shifts

Wage Range: $20.60 per hour plus 13% & 6% in lieu

Union: Non-Union

DESCRIPTION:

The RTCE will be working in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. The RTCE will work in collaboration under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the RRT Lead and/or the staff RRT. The RTCE will provide support on the units to ensure respiratory equipment is stocked; equipment is cleaned and provide support to the respiratory therapy team. This position is a support position to our front line respiratory team to ensure that the RRT is focused on core patient care duties.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Provides safe care that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellbeing of clients and families
  • Dealing courteously with patients, patients' family, visitors and team members in a positive manner, and assisting with communication technologies to connect patient with family and friends
  • Demonstrates accountability for own client care by adhering to BGH's policies and procedures i.e. positioning, feeding, and supporting clients personal care needs
  • Supports development of client independence in the practice of scheduling and directing their own care
  • Assists clients in working towards their identified program goals as appropriate under the direction of the RRT/MD/RN/RPN/PT/OT team
  • Collaborates with the RRT who is assigned to administer medications/treatments. It is an expectation that the RTCE has knowledge about the times medication/treatments are due and an understanding of common side effects. The RTCE is expected to inform the RRT of the need to assess for PRN medication administration as appropriate. RTCE cannot deliver but advise of need to the team.
  • Under supervised direction from the team the RTCE may provide informal education, to clients and families, colleagues and students
  • Assists with the provision of respiratory equipment under the direction of the RRT
  • Assists with patient repositioning and transfers under the direction of the RRT/MD/RN/RPN/PT/OT
  • Take samples to the laboratory
  • Transporting supplies and equipment within and in between units
  • Supports the development of professional RT practice through participation in unit-based activities as appropriate
  • Establishes goals and objectives while being at BGH as an RTCE
  • Communicates in a timely and effective manner
  • Participating and contributing in all aspects of infection control measures and/or programs.
  • Supports a clean and tidy environment by assisting in light tidying tasks as required
  • The Employee will adhere to the worker responsibilities as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, hospital safety policies, and dept/unit established procedures at all times. Where possible, take corrective action to address a hazard, otherwise report the unresolved hazard, dangerous circumstance, unsafe situation to self, other co-workers or the community, to their supervisor. Should the employee suffer a workplace injury or illness, he/she will advise their supervisor; actively participate in identifying and resolving the underlying cause(s), and participates in early and safe return to work as per Workplace Safety & Insurance Act.
  • Understands and is familiar with all pertinent BGH policies and procedures including those relating to workplace conduct. Complies with the BGH Commitment to uphold the Workplace Conduct and Reporting of Inappropriate Conduct policy and behaves in a manner that is consistent with the guiding principles and expectations
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment, and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in Respiratory therapy program or equivalent line of study (having completed at least the first year of study).
  • Valid BLS
  • Minimum one-year work experience in related field preferred
  • Positive interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately
  • Proven good attendance record.
  • Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
