Traffic Engineer - Traffic Control and Parking

As a Traffic Engineer within the Traffic Control and Parking team you will be responsible for ensuring the safe movement of all users of the transportation network. You will review subdivision and development plans to ensure a design that will operate safely and efficiently, and in accordance with applicable regulations and standards. You will also review and approve signage and road marking designs for projects of varying complexity ranging from operational and traffic safety improvements, signal construction projects, transit and cycling infrastructure, subdivisions, and annual surface improvement projects, among others. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with internal and external parties including consultants, developers, and other City departments. Attention to detail and familiarity with traffic operations, especially in the areas of signage and road marking is desired. Primary duties include:

• Provide professional engineering review and oversight while ensuring safety and operational standards are adhered to.
• Review and approve signage and road marking designs in accordance with applicable standards and guidelines.
• Review and comment on development circulation documents and construction drawings.
• Investigate and resolve complaints from the public or other interested parties.
• Mentor and train technicians and EITs.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil Engineering and at least 3 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work Click here for more details.
• A strong understanding of traffic engineering principles, the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) guidelines and general traffic operation requirements, including service and capacity analysis, traffic safety considerations, and traffic impact analysis, is an asset.
• Understanding of provincial and local legislation, regulation and standards as they pertain to traffic engineering and operations.
• Basic knowledge of ArcGIS (ArcMap), AutoCAD, Synchro and/or SIDRA.
• Success in the position requires the following competencies:

Workstyle

• This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
