Position Summary
The Assistant Manager supports the Unit Manager in leading the daily operations of the unit, ensuring an exceptional customer experience, operational excellence, and financial performance. This role partners with the Unit Manager to develop and lead a high-performing team, maintain Starbucks brand standards, and create a welcoming environment for customers and associates.
The Assistant Manager assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Unit Manager and plays a key role in coaching, developing, and motivating associates while driving sales, operational efficiency, and food safety compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Unit Manager in overseeing daily store operations, ensuring efficient, safe, and profitable performance while maintaining Starbucks operational and customer service standards.
- Recruit, onboard, train, coach, schedule, and develop associates to build a high-performing team, foster engagement, and support a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
- Lead by example to provide outstanding customer service, resolve customer concerns, build positive relationships, and continuously improve the overall customer experience.
- Support the achievement of sales, labour, and profitability goals through effective cash handling, inventory management, ordering, financial reconciliations, reporting, and cost control.
- Ensure compliance with Compass Group policies, Starbucks operating standards, food safety regulations, health and safety requirements, and quality assurance programs through regular monitoring and operational audits.
- Assist with staffing deployment, labour scheduling, promotional initiatives, seasonal launches, workflow management, and store readiness to meet operational and customer demands.
- Assume responsibility for store operations in the absence of the Unit Manager, demonstrating professionalism, sound judgment, accountability, and ethical leadership.
- Build collaborative relationships with customers, campus partners, and internal departments while identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency, team performance, and business results.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory or management experience in food services or hospitality; Starbucks experience is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing teams; management in unionized work environment is considered an asset.
- Strong customer service orientation with a passion for creating exceptional customer experiences.
- Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Experience with inventory management, cash handling, labour scheduling, and financial reporting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and point-of-sale systems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift or carry up to 25 pounds throughout the workday.
- Flexible availability, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
