About Highland Valley Copper
Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.
Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Reporting to the Integrated Planning Superintendent, the Chief Engineer is responsible for supervising the engineering team that supports copper production through short/mid-term production planning and data analytics across the value chain. The role works closely with the planning, support, and execution teams to deliver forecasts, budgets, 3-Year Business plans, mid-term designs, an integrated schedule for critical activities, report on results, and drive continuous improvement.
To be successful, we are looking for someone with exceptional interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, who can maintain a strategic vision of the business and plan accordingly to connect with the Long – Term planning horizons; someone with a strong technical background, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, who can prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced and dynamic environment to provide value based decisions. This role requires a self-directed individual with strong leadership skills, who can work collaboratively with others in a team setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Provide technical guidance and leadership to the Integrated Planning engineering team
- Optimize the deployment of the technical workforce to drive key strategic activities and define the strategy for the next months and years.
- Deliver a six-week rolling plan, monthly forecasts, an annual budget, and a 3-Year Business Plan.
- Supervise all aspects of drill and blast, including design standards and implementation, performance review, and continuous improvement
- Develop team members through planning, management by objectives, recognition, and mentorship
- Oversee the development of safe, optimized, and credible forecast production plans that align with our safety culture, sustainability strategy, and environmental and production commitments.
- Provide guidance, alternatives and controls for the Integrated Production team to deliver weekly and daily plans.
- Leverage production reporting and analytics to drive operating excellence.
- Connecting with the Operational Readiness and Strategic Planning functions to successfully deliver the HVC Mine Life Expansion project.
- Support trade-off analyses to optimize forecast/budget planning decisions across the value chain and proactively identify plan risks to develop risk management strategies.
- Influence site decision-making through detailed data analysis and understanding of site value drivers
- Drive continuous improvement of the daily/weekly planning and production reporting processes and tools to safely deliver monthly and annual production targets.
- Integrate water quality, biodiversity goals, community values and Indigenous perspective supporting sustainable planning and industry stewardship
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering (Mining or related)
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC)
- Minimum 8 years of experience, with prior exposure coordinating and supervising an engineering team in a mining or process setting
- Excellent digital proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite®
- Previous work in open pit, truck and shovel operations, and concentrators is an asset
- Proficiency in Maptek and RPM mining software is an asset
Pay Range: CAD $138,000 - $170,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
Working Conditions:
- Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
- Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
