The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for the right person to fill the permanent full-time position of Community Services Planning Coordinator to provide planning and development support services for the Community Services Division.

In this position you will be responsible for providing planning and development support services which includes the coordination of the approvals of planning and design of infrastructure, recreation, park facilities, culture facilities and open spaces through intra-departmental review and public participation processes.

Requirements:

Ideally to fill this role, you will have a university undergraduate degree in Land Use Planning, Landscape Architecture, Community Development, Leisure Services or other directly related discipline plus two years of relevant municipal experience that includes public participation and community planning; or a two-year Diploma from a post-secondary college in Land Use Planning, Landscape Architecture, Community Development, Leisure Services or other directly related discipline plus four years of relevant municipal experience that includes public participation and community planning.

In addition, you will have:

  • Demonstrated ability to gather complex pieces of information from various sources (public, landscape planner, planning specialist, Planning Commission, Managers, Superintendents and Supervisors) and synthesize them into sound planning and land use recommendations for the Community Services Division.
  • Demonstrated understanding of community development practices as they relate to project planning, public participation processes, community and park planning.
  • Knowledge and experience in community and park planning principles and guidelines, as well as the philosophy of community service.
  • Ability to work with staff and volunteers in project development.
  • Demonstrated skills in Land Use Planning and design.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate with other City Departments, community organizations, and private developers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff in the PPW department, other departments, agencies, community organizations, School Boards, general public and consultants.
  • Able to work independently in an environment that also demands and values a team approach.
  • Ability to draft and prepare reports, agreements, grant applications, proposals and letters for City Council, Boards of Council, and community presentations.

Demands of the Job:

  • Organize and attend meetings on weekends and or evenings, with and under the scrutiny of the public and often in an adversarial environment.
  • Regular contact with the public, private developers and engineering companies, community groups and the media.
  • Inspects Park sites and facilities under a variety of conditions depending on weather, the extent of construction or the nature of a public complaint.
  • Often involved in challenging negotiations to establish land developers' compliance for development projects that must confirm with Council's approved Community Services Division standards.

Salary Range: $46.56 to $49.01 per hour
