To support us on our journey, Sinai Health is looking for a Nurse Practitioner to support the Wasser Pain Management Clinic at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) at The Wasser Pain Management Clinic is a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC) who has additional nursing education and experience. The NP will have the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within their scope of practice. The NP's practice is grounded in the values, knowledge and theories of the professional nursing practice emphasizing health promotion and prevention of illness. The NP will function as a resource to patients, families, and health care professionals. Additionally, the NP will provide leadership in practice and the development of standards, processes and quality initiatives enhancing the care for patients of the Wasser Pain Management Clinic and the hospital at large. The position will involve a combination of clinical, administrative and research time and the breakdown will be determined at the start of the position and negotiated as the needs of the position change (i.e., 75% clinical, 25% admin/research).

Clinical Practice

Incorporate knowledge of diversity, cultural safety, health equity and determinants of health in the assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic management of patients/families and in the evaluation of outcomes.
Incorporates knowledge of clinical manifestations of normal health, acute illness/injuries, chronic disease/comorbidities and emergency health needs of patients.
Considers the principles of resource allocation and cost-effectiveness in clinical decision making.
Promote patient safety by mitigating harm and addressing immediate risks for patients and others. This includes a thorough understanding of assessing and managing risk for problematic use of medication in the chronic pain population as well as an understanding of managing pain in patients with a history of substance abuse.
Documents clinical data, assessment findings, diagnoses, plan of care, therapeutic interventions, patient responses and clinical rationale in a timely and accurate manner, while adhering to provincial legislation, policies and standards related to privacy and information management.
Develops and utilizes a variety of holistic, patient and family-centred care processes to meet the health care needs of the patient and their families throughout the continuum of care.
Analyzes data and clinical outcomes to identify patient issues and trends in health care to inform decision-making and actively engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Coordinates and engages with patients and their families and other members of the health care team to anticipate, discuss and resolve moral, ethical and legal issues relevant to patient care at the individual and organizational level.

Collaboration, Consultation & Referral

Consults with and or refers to other health care professionals at any point in the care continuum when the patient's condition is beyond the NP scope of practice or the individual NP's competence.
Acts as a consultant and accepts referrals from health care providers and community agencies.
Advocates for patients/families in relation to therapeutic intervention, health care access, the health care system and policy decisions that affect health and quality of life.
Identifies programmatic needs at the Wasser Pain Management Clinic and develops, implements and evaluates plans in response to those needs.
Collaborates with members of the health care team to provide and promote inter-professional chronic pain management care at the individual, organizational and system levels including primary care providers in the community.

Education & Research

Engages in evidence-based practice by critically appraising and applying current evidence (including research, best practices and theory) when providing health care services at the individual, organizational and system level.
Collaborates in and leads research initiative, disseminates findings as well as acts as a resource for others in the development of research projects.
Identifies, collects data and evaluates the outcomes of NP practice.
Collaborate with faculties and schools of nursing in the education of students, both in the academic setting and in the clinical setting at the Wasser Pain Management Clinic.
Engages in scholarly activities with a goal of acquiring and maintaining a clinical university appointment.
Teaches in seminars or other educational forums for patients, nursing, medicine and other allied health members.

Leadership

Supports and maintains the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Department of Nursing and the hospital.
Provides leadership in in the management of clinical care and in the development and integration of the NP role within the Wasser Pain Management Clinic and the health care system.
Contributes to the development of the nursing profession through active involvement and affiliation with other nursing organizations, professional associations and with the community at large.
Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Current registration (Extended Class) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Masters degree in Nursing.
Minimum five (5) years recent relevant nursing experience.
Minimum of two (2) years in chronic pain management.
Completed or willing to complete OUDT course upon employment
Member of NPAO and/or RNAO. Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution (preferred).
BCLS required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Comprehensive knowledge and clinical competence in caring for an adult chronic pain management population.
Use and interpretation of screening techniques and diagnostic techniques, tests and tools relevant to the chronic pain management population.
Effective verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills.
Evidence of leadership and management skills.
Experience and interest in conducting, interpreting and applying research to practice.
Effective decision making, problem recognition, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrated commitment to collaborative practice.
Ability to work effectively independently and under stressful conditions.
Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
