Job Summary
The Senior Manager, Network Planning is responsible for leading the Network Planning team and providing technical analysis and broad support to the Transportation and Operations functions. The role ensures that capacity plans are developed and aligned with CN Executive and Transportation directions. The incumbent's key functions include, leading the team, ensuring that the right level of detail occurs in the planning phase, and reviewing operational aspects for Network Operations leadership.
Main Responsibilities
Network Planning and Optimization
Lead broad engineering planning and analytical analysis
Organize and perform capacity studies and operations analysis for Corridors, Yards, and Terminals through the use of simulation, sound engineering principles, and computer tools
Organize multi-functional project teams to develop long term plans to growth our business and achieve operational excellence
Communicate trade-offs, impacts and recommendations to leadership and other departments in an effective manner, through presentations and reports
Capital Capacity Planning
Develop conceptual infrastructure plans to ensure line and terminal improvements
Detail layout designs and operating rational for improved track facilities or train services, including identification of the operational construction and economic pros and cons of alternatives
Optimize project costs, scope, and timelines to provide best possible return on investment, through engaging with Operations, Engineering and other stakeholders
Provide detailed quantitative input on capital budgets and business case development, prioritizing alternatives considering operational risk, timeline, and cost variables
Contribute to the Precision Planning Process (P3x) Revenue and Resource Planning process, through determining forecast workload requirements, capacity limitations, and investment triggers and trade offs
Leading Others
Mentor and coach Professional Engineers and Engineers in Training (EITs)
Develop new Engineers on the field to obtain their professional designation and to learn tools, processes, and knowledge on transportation engineering
Guide Engineers and evaluate their performance
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work weekends when necessary. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The role requires minimal travel (up to 20%) to Canada or operational locations required for site visits.
Requirements
Experience
Railway Operations
Minimum 10 years of experience
o Experience in railway operations and planning
o Experience in engineering analysis, operational research, and leading a team
o Experience as a Conductor
Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certificate/Designation
High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Transportation Engineering
Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
