Job Description:
This position reports to the Mgr, Lifecycle Maintenance Engineering within the Asset Management – Lifecycle Maintenance Team.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor the condition of HVDC assets and lead root cause and failure mode investigations on abnormal equipment operations or protection system failures.
- Perform technical control system analysis on HVDC system disturbances.
- Review, recommend and implement setting changes to optimize HVDC link operation.
- Provide real-time engineering support to field-based HVDC Technologists.
- Provide support in the management of equipment databases, analysis programs, system models and testing plans related to operation and maintenance of HVDC equipment.
- Monitor and report on the performance of the HVDC link to both internal and external stakeholders including AESO and CIGRE.
- Engage other engineering, planning, operations and corporate support groups to proactively ensure that HVDC operational engineering requirements are met.
- Support the ongoing CIP sustainment effort on behalf of HVDC Operations.
- Support the development of HVDC Standards.
- Support the development of lifecycle/ maintenance plans and work procedures for the HVDC converter stations.
- Travel to Sunnybrook and Crossings sites on a regular basis.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or eligible to become registered with APEGA in the near future.
- Minimum 3-5 years of utility experience including on site experience dealing with electrical substation equipment, protection and control systems.
- Some experience with Control & Protection Systems required.
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Knowledge/ experience with HVDC/ FACTS technologies would be an asset.
- General understanding of AC and DC power system protection and measuring systems.
- Proficiency with SAP and Microsoft Office Applications required.
- Experience with simulation tools and application of same to HVDC systems would be an asset.
- Proven ability of working with internal and external parties such as equipment manufacturers, service providers, professional bodies, etc.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to simultaneously manage a wide variety of issues.
- Ability to respond to unplanned link outages outside of regular work hours as required.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
- Must have a valid class 5 driver's license and be able to travel to sites.
- Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
