Job Description:

Reporting to the Director, Customer and System Projects, this position will provide leadership to a team of Project Managers primarily focused on the execution of Customer projects and AESO Direct Assigned projects. The position is accountable for overseeing the delivery of projects safely, on schedule and within budget, including dealing with contractors and suppliers to ensure project success. Familiarity with a gated project process and project governance and compliance requirements will be an asset. Ideally the successful candidate will have a track record of developing effective working relationships not only with internal departments, but with external stakeholders including customers, government agencies and regulators.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a regulated environment and engaging with senior leaders internally, with the Alberta Electric System Operator and with customers to ensure AltaLink delivers excellent levels of customer satisfaction.

The position will require the ability to make quick decisions and use past project execution experience to provide guidance to the team on project and organizational issues.

This is a leadership role which will include developing employees, establishing goals and objectives, setting priorities, and driving continuous improvement in addition to managing people day-to-day.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of project managers to delivery projects which achieve excellent levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Management of a portfolio of projects, including allocation, prioritization, contractor management, and dealing with escalated issues.
  • Develop and conduct performance management of a team of project managers.
  • Ensure compliance with governance processes and provide accurate reporting to Customers and the AESO of project status.
  • Continuous Improvement of and development of new processes including the application of technology / automation to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Review and approve contractor estimates and actual performance against cost, schedule, quality and safety expectations.
  • Build trusted partnerships with AltaLink's key construction contractors.
  • Work closely with other AltaLink functional groups to ensure commitments are met, and obstacles are removed.
  • Attend and at times lead project gate reviews.
  • Capable of standing in for the Director, Customer and System Projects.

Requirements

  • University bachelor's degree(s) in Engineering is required.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Minimum of 10 years of project management, project execution and/or related experience.
  • Previous people management experience would be considered an asset.
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Excellent problem solver coupled with a proven ability to lead groups involved in fast paced, high-pressure environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills complimented by strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously.
  • Process Improvement skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
