About this role …
Are you a well-rounded Designer with an insatiable curiosity and a strong understanding of home trends, consumer behavior, design principles, and production know-how?

We are seeking a talented experienced Designer to join the Umbra Studio and manage all aspects of product development from design specification to launch. Our ideal candidate is both passionate and driven and will work closely with our team to create functional and decorative innovations.

What you'll do…

  • Develop a range of innovative products in a wide range of materials including wood, plastic, metal, and fabric.
  • Produce accurate 2D and 3D product specifications and drawings and account for cost, ergonomic, safety and manufacturing limitations.
  • Continually search and identify new product ideas, designs, materials, and production techniques.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team that includes Category Managers, Designers, Developers in Asia, Marketing, and Sales.
  • Create prototypes as required for approval and customer presentations.
  • Communicate effectively and extensively throughout the design process with Graphic Designers, Product Development and Quality Control, Marketing/Sales teams.
  • Attend trade shows, vendor and client presentations as required.
  • Maintain regular contact with design community.

Requirements

What you'll bring …

Education: Post-secondary degree/diploma in Industrial Design or Product Design.
Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of work experience as an Industrial Designer. Knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes, especially plastics. Complete understanding of design for manufacturing, including knowledge of capabilities and limitations. Creative problem solving and analytical skills. Preference will be given to those with housewares experience.
Passion: You have a passion for design that solve real life problems in order to bring successful products to markets.
Design Sense: You have a strong design awareness and ability to translate trends into commercially viable designs. You are driven to design user-focused products and are enthusiastic to be part of the entire design process. You have a sound understanding of assortment planning and putting themes and collections together.
Technical: You have exceptional 2D skills like hand sketching, Keyshot, Illustrator and Photoshop rendering. You are equally skilled with 3D CAD. Experience with SolidWorks required.
Model making: You love working with your hands and will eagerly show off your exceptional model/prototype making skills in our workshop.
Entrepreneurial: You demonstrate a "no job is too small" mentality; you like to roll up your sleeves, jump in and get it done! You are a goal-oriented, high achiever. You appreciate the nuances of a private, non-corporate company environment.
Relationship Building: You encourage collaboration and are a team player who can develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers. You love to work with others who are as passionate about design as you are to achieve common goals.
Communication: You are comfortable and confident presenting designs and responding to questions.
Organization Skills: You thrive in a fast-paced environment. You have a strong sense of urgency, are self-motivated and work effectively under pressure. You have excellent time management skills.
