A campus of Memorial University, the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) is North America's most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response, and technology transfer supporting ocean industries. The School of Ocean Technology (SOT) promotes the growth of the ocean technology sector through education, training, applied research, technology transfer, and community engagement. The school delivers diploma, bachelor's, and graduate programs to meet this sector's needs, with an underlying focus on key ocean technologies. Operating within MI's School of Ocean Technology, the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) provides research and development support, industry outreach, and scientific and technical advisory services to clients and partners, with expertise spanning ocean observation, ocean mapping, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), aerial drones, autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The Centre is based at The Launch, MI's ocean innovation centre and a cornerstone facility in Canada's ocean innovation ecosystem, located in Holyrood, Newfoundland and Labrador, approximately 35 minutes from St. John's. This team works at the cutting edge of ocean technology, in collaboration with a wide range of marine sectors locally, nationally, and internationally, to enhance the safety, efficiency, sustainability, and profitability of maritime pursuits through the application of technology.
DUTIES:
Reporting to the Manager of Operations at The Launch, the Marine Services Technician will support the ongoing operations, maintenance, and administration of Marine Institute facilities, equipment, vessels, and marine infrastructure at The Launch. This position will assist with operational logistics and daily coordination to ensure marine assets are available, safe, and ready to support instructional, research, and commercial activities. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient, and client-focused environment while supporting academic, research, and industry activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of a diploma or degree in Marine Technology, Ocean Technology, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, or a related marine or technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience. The position requires demonstrated experience in vessel and fleet operations, marine facility management, and coordination of marine access, as well as experience providing client and operational support for research and development projects, educational programs, and marine training activities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude; excellent organizational and problem-solving skills; commitment to safety and quality workmanship; knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, WHMIS, and environmental regulations; experience preparing reports and maintenance records using computerized systems; experience in a marine environment including small vessel operations and maintenance; possession of a valid Class 5 Driver's License with Weight Alterations Certification; and a Restricted Operator Certificate – Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC), or the ability to obtain one. Experience in boat maintenance and repair, and familiarity with marine electrical wiring systems, marine motors and propulsion systems, hydraulics, and navigation systems, would be considered an asset. Certifications such as SVOP, forklift operation, fall protection, confined space, or related certifications are considered assets.
SALARY: $58,722 to $76,259 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel III, NAPE Local 7405)
