The New Brunswick Legal Aid Services Commission (NBLASC) is seeking an individual to fill a key role as Mediator to support the Family Law Services Mediation Pilot Project in Fredericton and Woodstock.

What you will do

The Mediator will serve as a vital component of the Mediation Pilot Project under the New Brunswick Legal Aid Services Commission. This role demands impartiality, exceptional negotiation skills, and a commitment to enhancing access to justice for families.

Reporting to the Director of Family Law Services, the Mediator will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating Mediation Sessions
    Conducting mediation sessions to facilitate constructive dialogue, identify areas of agreement and support parties in working toward mutually acceptable resolutions as a result of a marital or common law separation.
  • Conflict Resolution and Agreement Drafting
    Assisting parties in identifying key issues, potential solutions, and working toward mutually acceptable resolutions including parenting arrangements, child support and spousal support as well as other related issues where appropriate to support a comprehensive resolution. The goal is to arrive at a written agreement for the parties.
  • Coordination with Stakeholders
    Collaborating with the Mediation Coordinator to schedule sessions and align the mediation process with project's objectives.
    Preparing appropriate mediation documentation to clearly record areas of agreement and any outstanding issues and coordinating with private bar counsel, ensuring both parties receive independent legal advice before finalizing outcomes.
  • Program Development and Evaluation
    Contributing to the development, implementation and ongoing refinement of the pilot project, including providing practical input on policies, procedures and service delivery.
    Supporting the program's evaluation by maintaining records of mediation outcomes and providing feedback to improve service delivery.
    Assisting in the evaluation of project success metrics, such as case resolution rates and client satisfaction.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Need to have (Essential qualifications and skills)

  • Bachelor of Law Degree
  • Membership in good standing or eligibility for membership with the Law Society of New Brunswick
  • Recognized family mediation training and/or certification, or a commitment to complete required mediation training and pursue an approved certification or accreditation pathway as part of the pilot.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Family Law
  • Please state your date of admission to a Canadian Law Society.
  • Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.
