The Department of Justice and Public Safety is seeking a dedicated and experienced leader to join the Conservation Enforcement Unit as a Conservation Sergeant. As a key member of the regional conservation enforcement team, the successful candidate will provide leadership and oversight of district operations, including the management of staff, resources and enforcement activities, while supporting the effective delivery of the district's conservation enforcement program and the overall mandate of the Branch.
What you will do
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- managing district conservation staff through the development and implementation of an annual conservation work plan;
- approving all district enforcement files;
- supervising district conservation staff including managing employee performance, staff development, and ensuring proper scheduling;
- participating in human resources and labor relations issues;
- ensuring staff compliance with Acts, Regulations, Policies and Collective Agreements;
- monitoring the district conservation budget;
- managing district enforcement assets;
- attending court as required;
- maintaining reports;
- participating on various committees;
- liaising with and assisting other law enforcement agencies;
- carrying out other related duties as required.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:
Need to have:
- Diploma from a recognized forest resource or wildlife technical program or a Bachelor of Science in a natural resource related field;
- Successful completion of a recognized conservation enforcement program or successful completion of JPS administered sidearm course and control tactics training course;
- A minimum of eight (8) years of related post-diploma experience, five (5) of which must include enforcement duties
- Three (3) of which must be in a supervisory role;
- Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Some positions require written and spoken competence in French and English. Others will require written and spoken competence in English or in French only. Please state your language capability.

Operational Requirements: The following operational requirement are also required:
- Attend leadership training as requested;
- The position involves working in both an office setting and a mobile patrol vehicle environment
- Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license
- Work nights and weekends and respond to after-hours calls
- Work scheduled hours as determined by the collective agreement.
Once trained the successful candidate must have the ability to:
- Work alone with minimal supervision
- Carry and utilize control tactics tools including firearms
- Perform field work/patrols
- Ability to carry out physically demanding tasks
- At times, work outside in inclement weather on all types of terrain
- Operate patrol vehicles, snowmobiles, boats, ATVs, and any other machinery deemed necessary by the Department of Justice and Public Safety
Conditions of Employment: As conditions of employment, successful candidates will be required to successfully complete and maintain the following items arranged by the department:
- An approved psychological suitability assessment
- Department of Justice and Public Safety Use of Force training and firearm qualification.
- Any other training deemed mandatory by the Department of Justice and Public Safety
Nice to Have (their asset qualifications)
- Experience supervising, leading or mentoring staff in a law enforcement or regulatory enforcement environment.
- Experience reviewing and approving enforcement, investigative or occurrence files.
- Experience with employee performance management, coaching and staff development.
Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage
$2,809.00 to $3,507.00 Biweekly based on education and experience. In addition, biweekly enforcement premium of $92.05.

- Office locations:164 Arran St., Campbellton and 22 Commerciale St., Richibucto/1100 Champlain St., Dieppe
- Office layout: Private, enclosed office

- Hours of work: 80 hours bi-weekly.
