The Public Prosecution Services of the Department of Justice and Public Safety, Office of the Attorney General, is seeking individuals to join the Bathurst, Campbellton and Edmundston Regional Offices as a Legal Assistant.
The mandate of the Office of the Attorney General is to promote the impartial administration of justice and ensure the protection of the public interest in New Brunswick on behalf of the Crown. The Office includes the Public Prosecution Services Branch.
What you will do
Legal Assistants are a vital part of the Public Prosecution Services and play an important role in supporting an efficient and impartial justice system in New Brunswick. They work directly with the Crown Prosecutors and are responsible for the management of investigative files within their respective Regional Office.
Your work assignment includes the following responsibilities:
- Preparing and reviewing correspondence, court briefs, reports and court orders.
- Preparing the affidavits of service.
- Coordinating the service of court documents in accordance with the Rules of court.
- Managing the regional office, including responding to inquiries, managing the file management system, handling all aspects of disclosure requests including tracking them, maintaining office equipment, and other related duties as may be assigned.
Work will involve face to face and telephone communication with lawyers, police, witnesses, victims, accused persons and government agencies.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:
Need to have
- High School diploma or GED and
- Successful completion of a one (1) year related post-secondary education and
- Minimum of 5 years of related work experience
OR
- high school diploma or GED and
- minimum of six (6) years related work experience.
An equivalent combination of your education, training and work experience will be considered. Therefore, please include all relevant information in your application.
Various linguistic profiles are required:
Written and spoken competence in English and French, written and spoken competence in French, or written and spoken competence in French and spoken competence in English.

Nice to Have (asset qualifications)
- Post-secondary certification as a Legal Assistant or a Paralegal
- Experience in criminal legal field such as filing documents in all levels of court, formatting legal documents and applying Rules of Court
Subject to the response to this competition, the candidate may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage
$1,816 to $2,205 biweekly, depending on education and experience.
Work environment
- Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30
- Office locations: Bathurst Justice Building, Campbellton Justice Building, or Edmundston Justice Building
