We are currently looking for a Senior Safety Professional to join our Corporate Safety team on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Director of Safety, the Senior Safety Professional is an integral role within the Emera Safety Team that is tasked with leading corporate safety programs, standards and processes across the Emera companies. The position will support the implementation of the Emera Safety strategic plan, be responsible for overseeing and maintaining the corporate safety management system, oversee quality data analytics/reporting, and lead the enterprise safety & environment technology solution/platform (Cority) across the Emera group of companies.
Key elements of this role include:
- Maintain and continuously improve the corporate Safety Management System, clearly communicating requirements and expectations.
- Develop and implement corporate safety standards, programs, and processes, supported by targeted awareness materials, communications, and training.
- Lead the operation and ongoing enhancement of the enterprise safety and environment digital platform, ensuring effective adoption and use by end users.
- Establish and maintain governance and quality control processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting of safety performance data from operating companies.
- Analyze internal and external safety performance metrics to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Prepare monthly safety performance reports for senior leadership and internal oversight committees/councils.
- Conduct field-level compliance activities, observations, and related assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of safety controls.
- Participate in and support incident investigations, ensuring objective analysis and appropriate corrective actions.
- Provide professional safety and technical advice to Emera and its operating companies.
- Promote alignment and consistency across operating companies by sharing best practices and strengthening collaboration.
- Monitor changes to safety legislation and industry standards and advise senior management of applicable changes, impacts and recommendations.
- Take ownership of safety related initiatives, be a safety champion and support Emera's safety culture by speaking up on safety.
These skills will make you successful:
To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, or related discipline(s); or operational experience in high-risk environments where safety programs, processes and risk management were required.
- Five to seven years of progressive experience in safety management and systems implementation, and loss prevention.
- Knowledge of electric and/or gas utility operations would be advantageous but not essential.
- Demonstrated leadership and commitment to safety excellence.
- Strong strategic thinking, organizational and decision-making skills.
- Working knowledge of safety management systems (e.g. ISO 45001).
- Proven ability to influence, collaborate, and build effective partnerships across the business.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple initiatives.
A valid driver's license is required. Ability to travel to Emera operations in Canada, the US and Caribbean, will be a necessary part of the successful candidate's work routine.
