Who we are:

East Cumberland Lodge (ECL) is a 74-bed licensed long-term care home in rural Nova Scotia (population ECL has made significant investments in digital technologies to enhance resident care and organizational efficiency. This includes a modern call bell and communications system, PointClickCare electronic health records for integrated charting, and dedicated IT support. These tools improve safety, communication, and access to real-time resident information, ensuring high-quality, responsive care.

Position Overview:

We are currently seeking two enthusiastic, organized Long Term Care Assistants to join our team as Canada Summer Jobs students. This role focuses on working directly with residents to participate in the Digital Legacy Stories Project (an online storytelling program that captures and preserves their personal histories, experiences, and life lessons) and supporting Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) in delivering safe, person-centred care to residents. While this role does not provide in-depth personal care, it plays an essential part in enhancing daily living supports and ensuring a comfortable, dignified environment for residents. This includes assisting with authorized tasks such as responding to call bells, providing hydration therapy, supporting mobility needs under supervision, assisting with meal delivery and setup, completing unit tasks such as bed-making and laundry, and offering companionship to residents. The ideal candidate will have a background or keen interest in working with older adults, in health or health promotion and be physically able to perform the required duties as assigned.

Start and End Dates: July 1, 2026, to August 28, 2026 (8 weeks)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Make residents comfortable by being attentive, responsive and aware of the clients' needs and safety.
  • Use of technology, such as call bells, and requests for assistance must be addressed promptly and safely, or, as required, redirected to the CCA, LPN, or RN.
  • Assist residents in creating digital legacy stories using the program platform (e.g., story prompts, interviewing, recording, uploading content).
  • Help with unit tasks such as bed-making, supporting mobility needs and escorting residents to meals or other activities.
  • Ability to work alongside physical and occupational therapists, nursing staff, recreation staff, and residents.
  • Ensure activities are inclusive, accessible, and meet the diverse needs of residents.
  • Build rapport through active listening and maintain resident confidentiality, dignity, and autonomy in all interactions.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 10 or higher.
  • Willingness to learn and confidently operate new technologies such as the call bell system and Digital Legacy Stories software.
  • Physically able to lift at least 30 lbs. and perform role duties.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing residents' needs and routines.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience working or volunteering with older adults, people with disabilities, or in community programming.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Compassionate, patient, and dedicated to enhancing the lives of seniors.
  • Provision of a valid and current Criminal and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Previous long-term care experience is an asset.
