The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking an individual to join the Geological Surveys North Branch, as a Mineral Deposits Geologist, located in Bathurst.

As a member of the Geological Surveys North team and reporting to the Manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for proposing, preparing, and conducting high level geoscience research projects aimed at understanding the genesis, distribution and timing of metallic mineral deposits, particularly as they relate to the geological evolution of New Brunswick. Responsibilities include conducting field work and examining drill core; preparing and publishing geoscience reports, journal articles, maps and databases; and communicating project results at professional geoscience conferences and trade shows to promote the mineral exploration opportunities in New Brunswick. This position is responsible for reviewing and editing project documents, maps, and manuscripts prepared by staff, students, and peers; and for providing professional services, advice and geoscience information to mineral industry clients, engineering consultants, other government departments, and the public. This role is also responsible for incorporating results of research and industry data into existing geoscience databases; reviewing and overseeing project activities for consistency and accuracy; providing subject matter advice, guidance and mentorship to staff and graduate and undergraduate students; organizing and leading field trips; and contributing to rationalization of drill core holdings at the regional storage facility. Other related duties and projects may be assigned, as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: a Master's degree from a recognized geoscience program, or equivalent, specializing in economic geology; a minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience related to metallic mineral deposit research and/or exploration, including experience in stratigraphy, structural geology, lithogeochemistry, petrography, geochronology, geophysics and geotectonics. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

The selected candidate must be registered or be eligible for membership as a Professional Geoscientist with the New Brunswick Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGNB), or an equivalent accredited professional association recognized by APEGNB.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following: experience with ArcGIS or a similar GIS platform; experience working on New Brunswick mineral deposits. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

  • Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge, including working knowledge of stratigraphy, structural geology, lithogeochemistry, petrography, geochronology, geophysics and geotectonics;
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, policies and procedures;
  • Ability to use office technology, software and applications, including GIS and database software;
  • Planning and organizing skills;
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel to remote areas; conduct field work in extreme weather conditions; perform physically demanding tasks; carry tools and equipment; hike in all types of terrain, often in areas that are a considerable distance from roads; work from a field camp; wear required protective clothing and equipment during field work situations; work outside of the regular scheduled work hours on occasion; travel nationally and internationally as required, for industry-related conferences/meetings; work with diamond drill core, including heavy lifting; possess a valid Class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent; and maintain membership in the New Brunswick Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists.

SALARY: $78,546 to $104,494 per annum
