The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Health, Safety, Environment, and Risk (HSER) Advisor to join our HSER team in Long Harbour, NL.

The role is a permanent on-site position, working a 4x10s schedule (Monday to Thursday OR Tuesday to Friday) at the Long Harbour Operations site.

As a HSER Advisor, you will be responsible for guiding the operations to meeting its strategic objectives of conducting business with zero fatalities and becoming a leader in sustainable mining. You will cultivate a detailed knowledge of the HSER Management Systems and related permits, guidelines, regulations and other binding licenses to operate, as well as a detailed understanding of Vale Newfoundland and Labrador's (VNL) operations. You will represent VNL interests in external forums (e.g regulatory, industry associations, etc) and guide VNL to sustainable compliance and industry best practices by finding economical and innovative solutions to business problems. This may also include supporting capital or other engineering projects undertaken by VNL.

Your experience and skills will enable you to identify areas for improvement and provide advice or leadership to colleagues in the application of management systems and become the subject matter expert on VNL's HSER management system and support all audits, updates and research needed to ensure these systems are effective.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Provide HSER leadership and support to VNL operations through development, implementation, auditing, and continuous improvement of the HSER Management System, including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 compliance.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance by preparing and submitting required reports and maintaining permits, licences, and approvals to operate.
  • Lead planning and implementation of HSER management system enhancements, permitting strategies, and compliance initiatives, possibly including budgeting and scheduling.
  • Act as a proactive HSER leader through mentoring and coaching peers to achieve zero fatalities, regulatory compliance, and sustainable mining objectives.
  • Represent VNL in HSER?related industry associations, government working groups, and internal corporate or capital project teams, providing analysis and recommendations on regulatory and risk impacts.
  • Support corporate and site strategic initiatives by preparing timely, accurate HSER reports, data, and performance insights aligned with VNL strategic and tactical plans.
  • Maintain professional HSER competency through ongoing knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, and industry best practices; develop, deliver, and verify effectiveness of HSER training as required.
  • Conduct field inspections, audits, and contractor oversight to verify compliance with HSER requirements and management system expectations.

About You

Education:

  • A minimum of a college diploma in a related field is required (CRST or CRSP).
  • Professional designation is considered an asset.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years industrial experience in a similar role is required.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Environment Protection Act and associated regulations and federal Metal and Diamond Mine Effluent Regulations.
